  • Basic site on a family-run working farm with views of the sea
  • A five-minute drive from the local beach and 20 minutes from Sidmouth
  • Dog-friendly, with a couple of alpacas and a farm shop on site
Ready, set, go… if hikes over the South West Coast Path and paddles around the Jurassic coast are on your mind, South Farm Camping is your green light. The family-run working farm site ticks lots of boxes from the offset: sea and countryside views, easy access to the South West Coast Path and access to a National Cycle Route too. If golfing, tennis and beach days are some other essentials on your tick-list, Budleigh Salterton is only five minutes’ drive away and has a golf course, a tennis club and a pebble beach. Tasty barbecues won’t be too tricky either, since the site has a farm shop selling all sorts of delicious local produce and their own homegrown veg. The site’s based at the top of the farm, so spectacular views are all part and parcel of your stay. It’s a basic set-up, with toilets, drinking water, a washing up station and a shower unit. There’s car parking adjacent to the field (making the area safe for families), gas cooking permitted on the pitches only and charcoal barbecues welcome in the designated barbecue area only (no firepits, please). Well-behaved dogs are welcome, just as long as they’re kept on a lead on any part of the farm or site. As an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, expect lots of wildlife. If you’re keen enough to spot them, there might be hares, birds of prey, deer, skylarks and otters or beavers in the river bordering the farm (if you’re lucky). The site has their own small flock of sheep and a couple of alpacas. Set your sights on gorgeous off-site sights too, from the towns of Sidmouth and Exmouth, both 20 minutes’ drive away, to Otterton and its mill, half an hour’s walk away.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked: Location is great, site is on the top of a hill in the middle of a working farm. Great views all round. Lots of space. Farm shop on the road in. Well thought out, but no-frills facilities - which is what we were looking for. Toilet cubicles are large and the shower unit is a good size. Big enough to hose down a few small kids at once, which is useful after a day at the beach. Not far off the South Coast Path.

Disliked: Site is very exposed which may not be so good if the weather is unkind. Make sure you take some serious tent pegs as there are quite a few stones in the ground. There is a crate of pegs and hammers that you can borrow, but best to be prepared.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked: Perfect location for the coast path & sea views. Basic site with little details thought about. Like wheelbarrows to help you carry your gear from car park to camp field. The ground is extremely firm so the hammer and pegs offered to guests were put to good use. 4 porter loos, 3 sinks and a solar shower. Very clean facilities, although the toilets did have an odour, there was plenty of loo roll. Picnic benches and bbq area. Farm shop at bottom of hill. Drinking water on tap.

Disliked: Google maps took me in the back way. Head for Budleigh beach and then use maps to avoid the tight lanes. Nick allowed me to open the back gate for entry to avoid the long journey around. Thanks Nick, much appreciated.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked: The views were fantastic and the toilets and shower were clean.

Disliked: My gripe was in relation to the distance quoted. Whilst 1.5 miles was fair in relation to the distance from the entrance on the main road into Budleigh high street, it was another trek, maybe another mile, up to the camping area. Location was my main reason for staying and just wished i'd known this.

Liked: Loved the beautiful views and the peace and quiet

Disliked: Was extremely difficult to hammer the tent pegs in the ground as it's very stony. Luckily there were some stronger pegs on hand but was still a real struggle

Liked: All the space in the field, and kitchen set up. The views!!

Disliked: We probably chose the windiest weekend ever. Check the forecast as it’s pretty exposed - though beautiful

Local attractions

Beach day? Toss a coin between Sidmouth beach (20 minutes’ drive), Ladram Bay (10 minutes, with views of sandstone sea stacks) or Exmouth Beach (20 minutes). There are boat cruises from Exmouth that travel to further sandy and scenic points around the south coast. Kids might like the donkeys at The Donkey Sanctuary (25 minutes) or the vintage vehicles and farm animals at the World of Country Life (15 minutes). That goes for all the rides at Crealy Theme Park & Resort (25 minutes) too. Adults must, of course, be catered to, whether it’s with wine tasting at Lily Farm Vineyard (10 minutes) or peaceful days out at Pebblebed Heaths (15 minutes) or Bicton Park Botanical Gardens (10 minutes). Other spots for sweet, sweet afternoons include walks to Woodbury Castle (15 minutes), the lily pads of the Bystock Pools (15 minutes) and golfing at Woodbury Park (20 minutes).
