  • Family-friendly site on a working dairy farm in the Devon countryside
  • Exeter half an hour’s drive; Exmoor National Park 40 minutes
  • Pitches with flushable toilet and running water; heated shower block
If your kids think their cereal milk comes from the refrigerated section of the supermarket, how about blowing their minds with a holiday at Billingsmoor Farm? This rural site a quarter of an hour’s drive from the Devon town of Cullompton is part of a 162-hectare organic dairy farm. Not only will the children be able to witness the milking process, they can also help out with feeding the calves and collect eggs from the resident chickens. Another family-friendly perk at Billingsmoor is that the site is completely free from cars, which means that kids can play in the fields in complete safety. (As for the parents: don’t fret about having to lug all your gear to your pitch: wheelbarrows are provided.) Children might also enjoy building a den in the surrounding woodland, which lends itself to leisurely walks and a spot of relaxing forest bathing. Large grassy pitches each have their own private toilet and cold-water hand-washing facilities. (There’s also a communal heated shower block, sheltered washing-up area and launderette.) When it comes to meals, you can have a barbecue with the local produce sold at the small honesty shop on site. This is also the place to purchase wood for your campfire and to order breakfast pastries. For any other provisions, the nearest supermarket is in Cullompton. The proximity of the M5 means that within about an hour’s drive, you can be at a national park (Exmoor 40 minutes; Dartmoor one hour), a historic city (Exeter half an hour) or the beach (Sidmouth 50 minutes). Whether in the farmhouse or in the farmyard, owners Robert and Jayne are around to answer any queries you may have.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Loved the spaciousness of the site, it felt like you were on your own when at our tent as you couldn't see any other tent until on the path. The night skys were glorious, so little light pollution. We saw a meteor shower and a comet. The views are incredible. The owner was very warm and welcoming and the facilities were clean and had all that we needed.

Disliked: A few pot holes on the driveway in are somethimg to look out for!

Local attractions

Tiverton (20 minutes’ drive) is known for its medieval castle and for Knightshayes Gardens, an elegant mansion from the 1800s surrounded by formal gardens and woodland walks. Tiverton also has one of only five horse-drawn canal barges left in the country. There are heaps of attractions in Exeter besides the splendid Gothic cathedral, with its 15th-century astronomical clock. You can don a helmet and explore ancient underground passages, check out the decorative arts at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, or have a picnic by the River Exe as you watch a game of cricket. Lucky visitors to the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (45 minutes) might spot otters and beavers on the River Otter, in addition to butterflies in the flower meadows and heathland. At night, keep your eyes peeled for bats (and a spectacular canopy of stars, obvs) in this dark-sky area. There is also a fishery very close by (bring your own gear).
