  • Eco-friendly glamping deep in the Blackdown Hills
  • A 10-minute drive from Honiton, 30 from Taunton and 40 from Exeter
  • Stargazing haven: campfires and barbecues allowed
Sit back in seventh heaven and scope out the stars from Grey Willow Yurts… deep in Devon’s Blackdown Hills and on an inland plateau where the views will leave you starstruck. This site is all about down to earth and comfy stays: each of the traditional yabins (a cross between a yurt and a cabin) at this small and friendly family-run site has a woodburning stove inside, as well as your own area outside for a campfire (gas fires and barbecues are welcome too). Each one also has its own allocated amenities pod with a shower, sink and flushing toilet. One can never guarantee you’ll see a meteor shower here, but the yabins’ location in the middle of the Blackdown Hills is one of the best stargazing spots in the country. It's about 50 minutes from here too to Exmoor National Park, the first designated Dark Sky Reserve in Europe… if you’re a novice to the night sky, book one of the stargazing courses on site to see what’s what. Grey Willow Yurts is emphatically eco friendly, with drinking water coming from the site’s own borehole. There's also a washing-up point with hot and cold water, plus shelves for crockery, pans and the like. For campfire supplies, Dunkeswell with a local shop and Honiton with a supermarket are within about 10 minutes’ drive and Cullompton is within 25. For exploring further afield, the site is in base position for sunny dispositions on days out at Dartmoor, Exmoor, the Jurassic Coast and the sights and scenery of south-west England: it all sounds rather heavenly...

Liked: We absolutely loved our stay. My children (5 and 2) did glamping for the first time. We had beautiful hot weather. Morning breakfast at sunrise, days spent around the local beaches (it was too hot for planned hikes), and evenings spent around the yurt when my daughter was running around, playing and swinging in the hammock. Every evening we had dinner on the open fire or the BBQ. The yurt is very hot during the day, but when the sun goes down, the temperature goes on reasonable number and stays overnight. We were not cold at all at the beginning of September.

Disliked: The yurt gets very hot inside during the day. But nothing that I was surprised about.

Liked: We loved the open space! So much room for the girls to run around...flying kites, playing football and swingball. The kitchen area is really well equipped and it was lovely to have a real shower and toilet! We loved making campfires and using the woodburner. The yurt itself was spacious and clean. A really well thought out and cared for site. Great communication from the owners too. Very friendly.

Disliked: There is a little bit of a walk from the yurt to the bathroom but it honestly didn't bother us. We definitely plan on staying again.

Atlas cabin

Liked: Lovely location, quiet safe field for the kids to play, lovely helpful and friendly owners, large “yabin” with lots of room for the four of us. It was only half an hour drive from Charmouth and Lyme Regis which we loved.

Disliked: The bedding was not warm enough and the beds not so comfy, also missing a table and chairs under the porch area so we had somewhere to sit and eat when it rained. Filed would certainly benefit from a play area for the kids but they still had a great time without it.
