  • Adults-only set over 10 acres on the edge of an estuary village
  • Near the sands and nature reserve of Dawlish Warren beach
  • Wildlife lake, level pitches and pub serving food half a mile away
No need to hunt for a tiny and peaceful Devon destination: here's teeny Hunters Lodge Caravan and Camping Site on the edge of the estuary village of Starcross, near the sands and nature reserve of Dawlish Warren beach. Although it's listed as a tiny site, this adults-only site is set over 10 acres of grounds, so you could almost pretend to be surveying your own kingdom all the time when here… Once you're ready to go off exploring, public transport is close to hand for those who don't want to drive: the site is half a mile from Starcross rail station and coach stop, and 15 minutes’ walk from the site to the Starcross passenger ferry to Exmouth. Bring the dog along on the local walk around the 'horseshoe' (ask for details on site); pooches are welcome at Hunters Lodge all year round. Fancy some fishing? A coarse fishery is at nearby Exminster. This friendly site comes with excellent amenities including recycling and chemical disposal, drying facilities, shower block and washroom. For food, there are 28 ways of serving the River Exe mussels on offer at the Anchor pub half a mile down the road – better book for 28 days then…

Local attractions

Catch the passenger ferry to Exmouth to see its seafront and the famed 16-sided house A La Ronde, then head further inland to Devon’s county town Exeter, home of Exeter Castle and stunning Exeter Cathedral. Old buildings and castles are all around the area: 12th-century Powderham Castle lies just north of Starcross at the village of Kenton and there are more National Trust properties in Devon than anywhere else in the country. Topsham Museum, with period rooms, info on maritime history and exhibitions on local wildlife, is housed in 17th-century buildings overlooking the Exe Estuary. The acclaimed beach of Dawlish Warren is almost on the doorstep for fairground rides, summer events and old seafront standby Punch and Judy. From here it’s a scenic stroll to the Dawlish Warren nature reserve on the mouth of the Exe Estuary, with visitor centre and free admission. Taking the bikes along to Devon? The National Cycle Network Exe Estuary Trail goes from Dawlish to Exmouth and there’s more cycling through the woods at Haldon Forest Park, with a bike hire shop there if you’re not bringing your own wheels.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Beautiful setting not far from Powderham Castle and it's luscious garden centre. Also good for Dawlish Warren, Dawlish and Teignmouth. Absolutely amazing lookout over the countryside. It was quiet and peaceful, just what I crave. There is a road by the touring pitches but it didn't bother me. At night the dark sky is wonderful. Plenty of birds including owls and woodpeckers. Picnic bench at every pitch which was fab. Decent sized hardstanding pitch (not level) with a side helping of grass. Everything immaculately kept and very clean. Walks off the site, perfect for your furry companions. Bathroom facilities absolutely spotless. Owner was lovely.

Disliked: There's only one shower each for men and women and you have to pay for it. You have to pay for wifi too, which in this day and age just feels a bit much. Also, given I paid £18 for my dogs for 2 nights, a dog walk would have been appreciated.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Had a great stay at Hunters Lodge, very frendly staff. Camp site is basic which was exactly what we were after. Points to note, limited showers which cost an extra £1 for 7min (Plenty of time) only had to que once 👍. On the whole the the camp site is quite but the noise from the road does travel. Exmouth is a lovely place to visit using the ferry at starcross train station. I would also recommend Seldon & Teignmouth, Teignmouth has great dog beach near main carpark with a lovely cafe.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Loved this little gem of a campsite. Clean owner was accommodating. Peaceful till the chickens woke you up lol but was able to get fresh eggs. Showers and toilets were ok £1 for 7 mins was enough. Also you could wash your clothes if staying longer. There is a sink with cold water for washing but go round to the laundry room there’s the hot sink to wash pots. Would recommend to friends and family to stay. We will be back as we loved it.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: An absolutely lovely site, so peaceful and clean. A 15 minute walk in to Starcross. Paul was very welcoming and was always on hand. Showers are long enough of 7 minutes, just remember £1 coins! A lovely thought of putting a wooden picnic bench on every pitch.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Hunters Lodge was a quiet, peaceful and friendly escape to the countryside. It had just the right amount of amenities for simple camping living - 3 toilets and one shower - adequate electric, washing up, drinking water and recycling facilities, a lovely little pond and some cute chickens near the pitches. Management were around for anything we needed and we paid for a late check out so we could relax on our final day. The pitch was very generous and each one included electric and a wooded picnic bench. The location of the campsite was perfect as it was close enough to anything we needed - a Spar or train station just 15 minutes away - but far enough away from the village to make it a relaxing break. My friend and I would definitely come again and will recommend it to anyone looking a place to camp near the south Devon coast :)

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Well situated site, peaceful, made very welcome and lovely spacious pitch designated space.

Disliked: Few niggles rather than dislikes. Pitch was on a slop, and basic toilet shower facilities. But for the price they are more than adequate and kept very clean.
