  • Insulated pods in a historic stone quarry
  • Private bathroom for each pod
  • Communal covered area with tables and chairs
Tents can be wooden in the 21st century. Even if you’re having a hol in a historic stone quarry, which is where the modern camping pods of Quarry Pods are set, just a mile from the Devon/Cornwall border and seven miles from the bude-iful coast at Bude. These waterproof pods (each with their own private bathroom) are a step up from the traditional bothy structure and easily sleep up to four, and are designed to be toasty and warm even on a chilly night as they come with double glazed windows and sheep’s wool insulation – there’s an electric heater fitted too, just in case... Pods come with their own private washroom with shower, sink and wash basin adjacent to the pods, so no sharing or queuing (huzzah) and the site has a communal covered area with tables and chairs for a chat and coffee with other guests. All pods have mains electricity, lighting and a cool box.

Local attractions

The destinations of Devon and the coasts of Cornwall are both on your wooden doorstep, with the north Cornish coast seven miles away and with sandtastic views as well as access to the South West Coast Path’s clifftop walks. The coastal town of Bude is closest to the quarry and comes with a seawater swimming pool, surfing, kayaking the beaches of Crooklets and Summerleaze. The National Trust-managed pebble beach at Sandymouth is three miles further to the north for rambling around the rockpools sheltered by the high cliffs, while for village strolls and sightseeing Boscastle, Tintagel and Port Isaac are all on the same stretch of coast. For the Devon coast, the carfree cobbled streets of historic Clovelly village and 14th-century harbour are 16 miles away. Just along the coast from that is the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty the Hartland Peninsula: gawp at the gorgeous Hartland Abbey, work up an appetite ambling around the 12 miles of coast or buy a plant and stop for a cream tea at Docton Mill Gardens and Tearoom. Or you could just potter around near your pod instead: Dunsdon Farm was recorded in the Domesday Book and has several old farm buildings to get historical about as well as donkeys and horses to neigh hi to as you canter past; the farm also lies next to the Site of Special Scientific Interest the Dunsdon National Nature Reserve and is the habitat for several endangered species including nesting barn owls.
