  • Peaceful rural Devon tourer site five minutes’ drive from Kingsbridge
  • Salcombe beaches 15 minutes’ drive; Pennywell Farm 25 minutes
  • Landscaped gravel pitches with a playground and dog-exercise area
If you’re looking to access the pretty towns and beaches of south Devon, consider hunkering down at Island Lodge, a manicured and well-maintained touring site. A stay at this flower-festooned, family-friendly spot puts you within five minutes’ drive of Kingsbridge and 15 minutes from Salcombe’s beaches in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The two-acre grassland site is landscaped with natural Devon hedgerows and set in privately owned parkland. Access is easy, and the caravan, motorhome and campervan pitches are all gravel-based. Each has a free electric hook-up – just note you’ll need to bring your own equipment to use it. Purpose-built amenities are modern and well cared for, with separate facilities available for ladies and gents. All the showers have ample hot water, and there’s a family washroom as well as accessible facilities. Token-operated washing machines take care of the clothes, and a fridge-freezer is on hand for ice packs. The site has a safe area with swings, basketball hoops and space for ball games – please let the owners know in advance if you have kids and would like a pitch in full view of the playground. Dogs are welcome on site, but please be responsible and keep them on a lead while on site. Canine-friendly facilities include a large doggie shower, along with a small exercise area – alternatively, the quiet country lane adjacent to the site is just the job for dog walking.

Local attractions

The kids will have plenty to keep them happy. Pennywell Farm (25 minutes’ drive) has pony rides and goat-milking activities, while Babbacombe Model Village (45 minutes) features mini versions of English villages and landmarks. Climb aboard a small train to spot the big cats and giraffes at Paignton Zoo Environmental Park (half an hour), or head underground at Kents Cavern Prehistoric Caves (45 minutes) to see where Neolithic humans once walked. And that’s before you hit the beaches. Lively Salcombe (15 minutes) has two sandy stretches, and from there you can board the ferry across Kingsbridge Estuary to East Portlemouth Landing and languish on East Portlemouth beach (half an hour). There’s a near-deserted cove at Thurlestone, or sporty souls can hire surf boards to get out on the waves at Bantham (both 15 minutes). For a glimpse into Devon’s heritage, tour the fortified medieval manor house at National Trust – Compton Castle (35 minutes), and have a wander around the photogenic ruins of Elizabethan-era Berry Pomeroy Castle (half an hour).

Fully-serviced gravel touring pitch

Liked: Site facilities are very clean with laundry room and shower areas excellent. Water and electricity hook up fine. Friendly owner. Take note of instructions on how to get here from the owner, don't rely on the sat nav as there are some very narrow roads in the area . Free WiFi so can't fault that aspect.

Disliked: Not the site owners fault but little recycling available. You are given a green rubbish sack to put all your waste into, apparently the local council treats waste here as trade waste and charges the owner for each bag. Ridiculous really as a waste recycling plant is close by. No site shop so you need to pop into Kingsbridge about 8 minutes drive away for items such as bread or milk if needed
