Devon has its fair share of big campsites and busy holiday parks, and full of variety they are too. But if you’re yearning for a more quiet vibe, a stay at Mounts Farm Touring Park should have you sorted – it’s quiet, family run and with a relaxed feel, run by Karen and her friendly team. The pitches at Mounts Farm are generously sized and set in sheltered Devon fields, and the amenities are of excellent quality, with spacious showers, free hot water and a coin-operated laundry. There’s also an information area with a library. The on-site shop sells groceries and camping accessories, while for a sit-down meal the Good Pub Guide’s Fortescue Arms is less than a mile away.

Local attractions

You’ll find enough to do around Mounts Farm Touring Park to keep you busy for aeons, including sandy beaches, historic houses, gardens, family days out and exploring the towns and villages of Devon. The park is near the market town of Kingsbridge, which has a market three times a week and a farmers’ market once a month. Kingsbridge’s quay has a tourist information centre and is also where you can take a river cruise to Salcombe, the most southerly town in Devon; arrange a fishing trip or watersports lessons from here or pick up the best of the day’s catch at the local fishmonger. Both towns are in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as are nearby Totnes and Dartmouth. Totnes, known for its alternative and independent community (it even introduced its own currency, the Totnes pound, in 2008) is the place to pick up handmade clothing or antiques at its twice-weekly market and has more listed buildings per head of population than any other town in the UK. In Dartmouth, take the kids on a river cruise along the Dart, have them feeling chuffed on the Dartmouth and Totnes Steam Railway or let them loose at the all-weather Woodlands Family Theme Park, one of the biggest theme parks in the UK. There are stacks of other family attractions and days out in the area: for wildlife, the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm, the award-winning Pennywell Farm, Paignton Zoo, the National Marine Aquarium and Torquay’s Living Coasts among others, or take a day trip to nearby Dartmoor for pony spotting, waterfalls, walking and more. Nearby Buckfastleigh has an otter farm and butterfly sanctuary: after you’ve fluttered around there for a bit, take a trip to Buckfast Abbey, home of the famous Buckfast tonic wine and where Rab C Nesbitt staggered to on a pilgrimage from Glasgow.
