  • Family-run site on the outskirts of Dartmoor National Park
  • Just over 10 minutes’ drive to Newton Abbot and 30 to Torquay beaches
  • Bovey Tracey within 15 minutes and Paignton half an hour away
For a hol full of zest in south Devon squeeze in some time at family-run Lemonford Caravan Park, a well-located spot for exploring the many attractions in this area. It’s between country and coast right on the edge of Dartmoor National Park and half an hour’s drive from the beaches around the English Riviera resorts of Torquay and Paignton. After settling in, trekkers might want to tackle the craggy terrain of Dartmoor first, scrambling over the hills and paddling in the streams and rivers of this sprawling granite-studded setting. The walk up to Hay Tor (starting from just over 10 minutes’ drive away) is stellar if you’re seeking a structured stroll: it’ll have you taking in the classic moorland scenery while you work up a sweat. Widecombe in the Moor (a 15-minute drive) is also worth stopping by for a typical Devonshire town with a cracker of a church (so splendid it's known as the Cathedral of the Moor). More of a beachcomber? You can make a beeline towards Teignmouth and Dawlish for castle-building on the sand or choose Paignton Pier for coastal sessions in between tenpin bowling, fairground rides and crazy golf (all around 30 minutes’ drive away). Leaflets for farm parks, model villages, caves and other stuff to do are all on display at the site’s information area if you’ll be looking for more attractions and activities. Also at Lemonford Caravan Park are amenities including toilets, showers, washing-up areas, a shared freezer and a laundry room; a spacious separate wetroom and toilet are also available for guests with limited mobility. For other essentials like supermarkets and town shops, Newton Abbot (just over 10 minutes away) is your hub and it has a leisure centre should kids be wanting to swap sessions on the park playground for splashing in a swimming pool.

Electric hardstanding pitch

Liked: Bus service (Country Bus) is available from outside the site which made getting about very easy.

Disliked: As others have a ready said. This site is now mainly statics and season tourers. Pitches are unkempt, electrics were aged, toilet blocks old and tired and didn't feel clean. Nothing in the way of amenities in the village either.

Electric hardstanding pitch

Liked: Leaving

Disliked: How long have you got? This place is a total disgrace and the owners should be ashamed of taking peoples money considering what they provide in return. The pitches and the rest of the site in general are not looked after all, it’s in a state of total disrepair it feels almost abandoned. Our EHU turned off in the night meaning our leisure battery got drained and all our food in the fridge spoiled. The place feels like some sort of squat site with most of the pitches being used by people living in their caravans long term, with rubbish and children’s toys strewn around the touring area. The facilities are absolutely foul and extremely basic. No heating at all, There was a disintegrating used plaster in the shower for the duration of our stay and the general filth was astounding - I came out of the shower feeling dirtier than I went in. There is just no care, no regard for paying customers, clearly just a cash cow for someone. The owner should be absolutely mortified to put their name and reputation against this “business”. We booked here as it was cheaper than most in the area but saving a couple of extra quid is not worth it. I understand that budget campsites aren’t exactly the height of luxury but this is a joke. I would recommend pretty much anywhere else. Nearby road noise No Wifi. After making a complaint, initially about the fact that we lost EHU, I was met with the most condescending person I’ve ever come across. Attempted to explain that I needed to actually plug out cable in (we had already disconnected it so we could get out of there) I explained I knew how the EHU’s worked, and then was told I should have tried flicking the trip switch, as if we didn’t do that in hopes of saving our freshly stocked fridge items from spoiling. Was then told it was actually turned off due to construction works?!? The mind boggles. Anyway, eventually got offered a free stay which was quite amusing as you’d have to be the one paying me to come back. Staff appeared nonchalant disconnected Bad turkey teeth too. Hope this helps someone make a better choice.

Local attractions

It’s 10 minutes’ drive from here to Buckfast Abbey, an active Benedictine monastery dating back to 1018; get cultural here then balance it out with an offbeat activity like a trip to the House of Marbles in the small town of Bovey Tracey (under 15 minutes away) for the mesmerising glass displays, games museum and pottery pieces. For urban times in a bigger settlement, Exeter’s 30 minutes away – skedaddle here to tour the cathedral and the city centre’s underground passages; high-street shopping is also excellent in Devon’s capital on the River Exe. Also on the water, Plymouth is 35 minutes south if you fancy checking out the famed spot where the Pilgrim fathers first left for the US on the Mayflower in 1620...
