  • In a secluded Devon valley a couple of miles from the coast
  • Adjacent to three coarse fishing lakes and 10 minutes from Torbay
  • Within 15 minutes' walk of the nearest pub
What a well named site this is. For Rocombe Valley Retreat near Newton Abbot in Devon is indeed in a valley, and is a peaceful bolthole from bosses and the like: it's highly likely that work wouldn't find you, were you to settle down here for a matter of weeks… The retreat is also splendidly well set in its Devon locale, with glamping units in a field beside a stream and three mighty pretty lakes, all a couple of miles from Devon beaches and a piffling 10-minute drive from Newton Abbot, Teignmouth and Torbay. The nearest pub, serving food and ales, is a 15-minute walk away, and four more pubs and restaurants are within a five-minute drive. All Rocombe Valley accommodation comes fully equipped with cooking equipment, cosy double beds with all bedding supplied, and woodburning stoves using wood coppiced from trees on the farm. Flushing toilets and hot showers are within easy reach in the farm amenities blocks. There's parking on site for several cars and coarse fishing is available on the lakes adjacent to the valley.

Yurt (large)

Liked: The communal area was great and had everything you need to cook a full meal and feed a family of 5 with plenty of seating areas, the hot tub was fantastic and there was always a supply of logs available (apart from once and it took less than 30 mins for them to be delivered to our yurt) Couldn’t have been any better, very welcoming and great location.

2 bedroom safari tent (family)

Liked: The facilities were brilliant- communal kitchen with cooker, fridges, sink etc, as well as 3 blocks of toilets and showers. We stayed in the safari tent which was AMAZING! Lovlry decking and comfy furniture outside- beds were very comfy and linen provided which was a bonus. The hoy tub was INCREDIBLE, we stayed in April so thought it'd be too cold but we were so wrong. Elliot was fab and helped us with anything we needed, super friendly and professionals. Brilliant in terms of distance to Torquay, 5 minutes away! But also a lot of time spent on site, loads of place for kids to run around and play. We booked the entire site as a family with ages ranging from 1-86! Thoroughly enjoyed by all of us- even in the rain!

Disliked: Took us a minute to find out how to start a fire (all accomodation comes with an indoor fire place), so the first night was cold but that's our own fault 😅 make sure you know how to light a fire!

Yurt (large)

Liked: All of it, yurt was amazing, location was secluded yet close to the town to save on travelling to much. The owners were very helpful and friendly and very easy to contact. the hot tub was amazing and a very good way to end the day. I don't usually go back to the same place twice but I would definitely go back to stay here. No WiFi but good 4g coverage on o2. Really disappointed that we had to leave.

Disliked: The shower was a bit small, at 6'4 it was a bit of a struggle but it was clean and a good shower.

2 bedroom safari tent (family)

Liked: We stayed in the safari tent. Really comfortable beds and a small camping stove which we only really used to boil the kettle for coffee as there is a communal kitchen with an oven and full-sized hob. Basic cooking equipment was provided, but we mostly used our own which we had brought with us for camping elsewhere, as the pans were a bit small. Fridge-freezer was available, one per tent/yurt, which was very much appreciated. The wood-fired hot tub was a real hit - once we'd worked out it takes a while to heat it up! Toilets and showers were well maintained during our stay. Bring a torch to use them after dark! Location of the site is great - close to lots of places for day trips. Would definitely stay here again.

Disliked: Only thing I would change is to add larger candles on the terrace - as it is obviously very dark once the sun goes down - and the tea lights didn't last very long.

Liked: Hot tub and peaceful location near to some nice pubs.

Disliked: Could do with a mirror in the yurt or separate bathroom area cubicle on site for teeth brushing, doing your hair etc.
