  • Dog-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive away from Sidmouth
  • Surrounded by trails and a 35-minute drive from Dartmoor National Park
  • Firepit and log bundles for hire, and hot showers provided
If you’re keen on the sound of a simple getaway with ample bike rides, campfires and beach days (among other things), there will be some smiling faces at Forest Edge. This tree-lined rural setting is within the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where walks and cycle routes weave past the likes of woodlands, open heaths and river valleys. There’s a lot that’ll turn your head locally, aside from that. Sidmouth, a scenic seaside resort with Regency architecture, a beach and pretty hikes to Peak Hill, is only a 10-minute drive away from Forest Edge. This town is known as the gateway to the Jurassic coast, so you could soon be hunting down fossils and sheer cliffs. Handily, it’s a five-minute drive to Ottery St Mary, a pretty handy town (known fondly by locals as Ottery) with a good number of independent shops, as well as a supermarket. If you’d rather have a pint of something local, the local pub is only a 20-minute walk in the opposite direction to Ottery St Mary. If you’re back after 10pm, it’s quiet time in the designated quiet zones on site (so that families and other sleepy guests can get their important shut-eye). You may very well be ready to hit the hay after exploring the 30 acres of wild land surrounding Forest Edge or visiting local National Trust properties. Earlier on, feel free to hire a firepit and log bundle from the site, which includes firelighters and kindling. Fresh water points, a toilet block and hot showers make up the site’s other very handy facilities. Dogs are very welcome here, just as long as they’re kept on a lead at all times within the site.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Great location and huge plots. Really friendly and accommodating owners. Not far from the coast and the amenities (showers etc) were great. We left early because of the weather, but that’s the only reason. I imagine in good weather this place would be lovely.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Great site and very warm welcome from Andy. Nothing was too much trouble! The pitch was spacious and the facilities basic but clean and all in fine working order. For the down to earth camper Forest Edge is ideal. Shade might be a problem but the English autumn did not allow us to be concerned about over heating!

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Lovely well maintained campsite next to forest. Spacious pitches and quiet but family orientated. Clean shower and toilet blocks. Shower’s spacious and hot Great slip and slide on site for school holidays, which was great fun for kids and grown ups

Disliked: Only one washing up sink, so often queue to use

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Pitch size, level pitches. Clean

Disliked: Advertise 3 dogs included. When arrived said only 2 dogs and charge for dog. Not what advertised. We’re able to show advertising. Only later after another unfortunate incident did they say they were not going to charge us for the dogs. 😵. Owners a bit manic. Need to relax with campers.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback, it wasn’t a great start when you tried to smuggle your three dogs without paying 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ as for manic owners, not sure where you come from , your wife or girlfriend decided to drive to the toilet every time? Which was approximately 80 feet from your pitch. and as for being on the perimeter of the campsite, most people like to be there, not sure what your problem was.???? Anyway, I hope you find a lovely campsite with everything you need for the future Kind regards Forest edge

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Very friendly welcome. Private style, large pitches. The pitches were cut into the meadow, it was a really nice touch to have the longer wild patches to make it feel like your own spot. Showers warm, toilets clean. Dogs welcomed on leads. Dogs even had a field up the top to have a run and stretch. Our fire pit and logs were delivered to us each night which was a lovely touch. Would definitely come back and recommend others.

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked: Lovely warm welcome. Consideration for best pitch to suit our needs.. we have 2 very friendly dogs. Good location to facilities too as our water pipes burst.. lovely large flat well drained pitches.. right next to the forest where there are lovely walks that go for miles and miles. The weather was very wet but we were so happy.. lovely warm showers, great pub nearby for great Sunday roast and lots of lovely little coves to visit.. Beer was especially interesting and lots to see plus great places to eat. We had a really really lovely stay.

Disliked: All good, cannot find even a constructive criticism..

Local attractions

Fancy a good hike? Pull on your outdoor gear and make a beeline for Dartmoor National Park (35 minutes’ drive). The craggy landscape has heaps of walking trails and wandering Dartmoor ponies, as well as the occasional Neolithic tomb and medieval farmhouse. Finding lush outdoor scenery is rather easy, what with all of the gorgeous scenery around the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Alpaca trekking (10 minutes) is a unique way to take it in (and spend a couple of hours with a bunch of - possibly - hilarious animals). Donkeys provide the dramatics at The Donkey Sanctuary (10 minutes) in Sidmouth; plus, there’s the bonus that they’re being very well cared-for thanks to the funding of visitors. Shoot down the log flume or pay a visit to the family of meerkats at Crealy Theme Park & Resort (20 minutes) too.
