  • Peaceful wild campsite with views of Devon countryside near Sidmouth
  • A 20-minute drive to Branscombe beach; 25 minutes from Exmouth
  • Just off the East Devon Way and close to the South West Coast Path
In a rural setting in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Fire Beacon Camping is a fabulous location for a countryside escape. If you’re after total peace and the chance to contemplate the moonrise and sunset, then this is the place for you. And thanks to the lack of light pollution in this secluded spot, after dark on clear nights you’ll be treated to glittering starry skies. All this on offer, and yet you’re only 10 minutes’ drive from the beach at Sidmouth. Hikers, listen up – it’s also a 15-minute walk to the East Devon Way, which connects with circular woodland footpaths around the campsite. Serious walkers can join up with the South West Coast Path at Sidmouth. Cyclists have it good round here too, with the challenging River Exe Loop and family bike routes along the Otter river both less than 15 minutes’ drive away. You can be practising your tennis serve or golf swing in less than 20 minutes, or take an indoor dip at LED Sidmouth Swimming Pool on the occasional rainy day. There are plenty of pubs, tea shops and restaurants in seaside towns like Budleigh Salterton (20 minutes' drive) and Exmouth (25 minutes), but Sidmouth is your best bet for independent shops and supermarket shopping if you need to stock up. If you'd like to support local businesses, there are also several farm shops in the surrounding area.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We loved the location, the stars sunset and moon was amazing, it was quite and relaxing. Composting toilets where not smelly although maybe some lavender hanging in there may be nice addition Incase seats are left up.

Disliked: The only shower there was on site didn't stay a warm temperature on day one and on day two it only heated UpTo 15 degrees max and turning its self off, the last day it didn't work at all. Would of thought as it's an outside open air shower it is important it runs at a warm temperature. Had to provide own water or pay for it onsite due to no drinking water, there was no hot water at all to do dishes either. Rather than wheelbarrow to get camping equipment to and fro car a festival trolly type thing would of been helpful especially as the fields on a slope

From the manager: Firstly I can only apologise that the shower was temperamental during your stay, at one point you said it was too hot! This was mainly due to the inclement weather. The first line of our description does say we are a wild campsite & as such means we have basic facilities, which would not include hot water for washing up. Also I am sorry you didn't read about the facilities onsite before you booked, as you would have seen, we don't have drinking water onsite. As a 'pop up' campsite it is not financially viable to have a filtration system & pay for water testing. Thank you for your suggestion of a festival trolley for guests to transport their gear, this is something we will look into for next season. Once again apologies for any inconvenience. Regards, KT

Liked: Quiet location, environmentally friendly approach, friendly welcome from KT and Ricardo, fantastic views. There is a composting loo and outdoor shower, the ability to hire a fire pit and buy wood. If you like a "back to nature" approach to camping then this site is definitely worth a look.

Local attractions

Treat the kids to a day on the splash rides and mini-trains at Crealy Theme Park and Resort (20 minutes' drive) or try out the dumper rides at Diggerland Devon (25 minutes). Meanwhile everyone – even grumpy teens – is likely to love meeting the residents at The Donkey Sanctuary (15 minutes). For bucket-and-spade days, Budleigh Salterton and Branscombe (both 20 minutes) have long shingle beaches for kicking about in the waves, while Sandy Bay beach (30 minutes) is a fab spot for windsurfing, rock pooling and swimming – there are lifeguards on duty in summer. One of the National Trust’s strangest properties is close by – A La Ronde (25 minutes) is a bizarre 16-sided house with interiors swathed in shells. Delightful Beer (20 minutes) has a fishing harbour, ice-cream shops and indie art galleries to potter around, and Sidmouth (10 minutes) has a lively cultural scene too, with a theatre and cinema, as well as summer concerts and festivals on the prom.
