  • Westcountry base with easy access to the A38
  • On the southern side of Dartmoor National Park
  • Family run for over 20 years
What a Westcountry base is . (And if you don’t find a veritable heap of attractions and activities to your tastes all around, you might not find it anywhere.) Pitch up here with easy access to the A38 and to be to be among the wild, the rugged and the scenic sights of the southern side of Dartmoor National Park, but also close to the beaches, cities and villages of the Devon coastline – Bigbury-on-Sea is nine miles away and Torquay, Paignton and Plymouth about 17 miles to the east and west. It all sounds chest lovely… Also worth an honourable mention are the waterfalls, vintage railways, theme parks, old old buildings, horse riding, birdwatching and a whole heap more to see and do all around the vicinity, all from an exceedingly peaceful wildlife haven with amenities so immaculately maintained they’d pass muster anywhere. Sticking on site, lie back to gaze at the stars of an evening, or laze around during the day to see red kites, buzzards, great-spotted woodpeckers and the park's own menagerie of two cats, a family of guinea pigs and over a dozen chickens. Off-site, wavering on what to do in the area first/next? The exceedingly amiable team at have been welcoming guests to the Westcountry for over 20 years and can send guests on or off the beaten track as requested.

Local attractions

Dartmoor should take up at least a few days – have happy ambles around the wooded valleys and the old-style Dartmoor villages, or get active hiking, biking and horse riding among the park’s 450 miles of paths, tracks and open moorland. Then, perhaps, some pony petting or hacking, some tor climbing and a bit of cooing at the dwellers of Dartmouth Zoological Park… Also in Dartmoor (maybe make room for a few more days), drop along to Becky Falls, one of the best known sites of the moors, and cascade to Canonteign Falls in the Teign Valley, the highest waterfall in England. And then travel along to the River Dart for boat trips along its waters or a puff on the always popular South Devon Railway, stopping off at Dartmoor attractions along the way like Totnes Rare Breeds Farm, Dartmoor Otters and Buckfast Butterflies (find the start of the railway at Buckfastleigh, just off the A38 near Buckfast Abbey). Go east from Cheston to arrive at Dartmouth, Paignton and Torquay (and maybe make room for a few more days). As you’ll probably be expected back from holiday at some point, you might have to restrain your eager self here to one sight in each: let the kids go wild at Woodlands Theme Park in Dartmouth; chatter among the 2000 or so animals among six different habitats at Paignton Zoo; and delve into the prehistoric sights of Kents Cavern at Torquay. To the north and inland from Torquay et al is Exeter, also essential for a day out if you’re in these parts – and stop off at Exmouth on the way while you’re at it. More underground amblings are here at Exeter's Underground Passages, the tunnels that shifted clean water along their pipes to the homes of medieval Exeter; above ground, historyheads can take a look at Powderham Castle six miles to the south.
