  • Family-run park in a rural Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Near Dartmoor and less than 10 miles from the south Devon coast
  • Communal fridges and hot showers; campfires allowed
Near Dartmoor National Park but less than ten miles from the famed sands of the south Devon coast lies Holsome Park Camping, family run by Louise and Graham and set in the Devon countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You might want to pitch up and hang out here for some time because of the smashing sunsets and the far ranging views right over to Dartmoor, but if/when you do fancy some county investigating, the A38 is only 10 minutes away – how wholesomely handy. Holsome Park is a popular place for its quiet but family-friendly atmosphere and its pitches where guests can fire up campfires underneath those Devon sunsets. Toilets, hot showers and washing-up facilities are available. Holsome Park also has two communal fridges and a power point for phone recharging; fresh eggs and meat are often available to buy.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The site was simple but a perfect base if you were visiting places in the area! There was enough space in the field so you didn’t feel you were camping on top of others and the facilities were clean and well maintained! Being on a farm, we were surrounded by animals which my 6 year old nephew loved! The option of feeding the chickens and lambs in the morning was an added bonus!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This campsite was absolutely lovely. It is a big field with plenty of room to spread out and a play area situated in the middle so you can keep an eye on the kids without worrying. The toilet blocks are superb, hot showers with proper cubicles, several toilets and they always seemed lovely and clean (no dodgy smells!). The washing up facilities are plentiful and inside the shower block so you don’t get wet when it’s raining. Two large fridges and freezers if like us, you are on a non electric set up, these were invaluable. There are also phone charging facilities in little lockers. We hired a fire pit for £5 per night and bought a bag of wood for £4 both pretty reasonable. In the morning we went and fed the lambs and the chickens which my son thought was super and the young girls that took us round were lovely and very professional. I cannot fault this campsite and for the money especially it was exceptional value.

Liked: Absolutely fantastic campsite. The owners were so lovely and so easy to talk to. We went on a fantastic farm walk with Graham, and Louise was always on hand to help. The facilities are spotless, as is the site. The area is very well kept and there is a lovely little play area for children. I can’t recommend Holsome enough! We will definitely be returning. Thank you!

From the manager: Hi, Apologies, but i don not offer Wifi at our site as we are on the end of a telephone exchange with a copper wiring hence our broadband speeds are reminiscent of dial up internet connections ..... if i offered that then i would deserve a minus score.... The photos of our site show that we are a family campsite that offers swings and a slide with a big open field for children to play in. There is also the opportunity to feed the lambs and chickens, if children and or adults wish to take part. I apologise if you did not like my approach of greeting you at check in and then leaving you to it, unless you let me know that you have a problem. I disagree with your comments on cleanliness, as you can see from the other reviews i have high standards, so i am tempted to think that you have me mixed up with another campsite.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This is a great campsite! Loads of space in the field so you don’t have to camp really close to anyone. Lovely clean hot showers and toilets, with a functional washing up area with fridges/freezers and charging points. The little shop was useful especially as we ran out of firewood - it was great to be able to use a fire pit as it was fun to sit round the fire toasting marshmallows. We would definitely stay here again.

Disliked: Nothing

Route directions

Please note that the roads in south Devon can be narrow lanes at times. From Exeter: Come down the A38 from Exeter and go past the junctions marked for Ashburton, Buckfastleigh and Rattery. Take the Marley Head junction signposted for South Brent, Totnes and Dartington. At the roundabout off the slip road, take the third exit on the right signposted Diptford. Go along this lane and at the crossroads go straight across. Turn right at the T-junction. Take the third road signposted for Diptford (Christone Cross). The farm lane is the next left (approximately 200 yards from the junction). Go down the lane past the farm buildings on the left, and Holsome Park is the next left. From Plymouth: Come off the A38 at the Avonwick/South Brent junction; follow the road signposted for Avonwick and Totnes. Once you have gone past the Avon Arms on the left-hand side of the road and Cousins Garage on the right, you will go over a small bridge. Take the righthand turning immediately past the bridge. Keep going along this road up to the village of Diptford. Take the third turning to the right signposted Moreleigh and Kingsbridge. When you are reaching the top of the hill before you get to the T-junction you will see a right turn with a triangle of grass. Turn right and go down the lane. The site is the third on the left just after the farm buildings (second left).

Local attractions

It's a 10-mile drive down some narrow Devon lanes to get to the coast from Holsome Park Camping, but you'll surely you'll find that worth it when you arrive: miles of award-wining sands and cracking coastal hikes are around the closest beaches of Bigbury, Bantham, South Sands, Blackpool Sands, East Soar Cove, and Slapton, along with trad old pubs, cream tea cafés, restaurants and seaside fish and chips. This is of course hiking land, whether you want to wander over moors at Dartmoor, stride the five miles from Dartington to Totnes or take the nearest stretch of the South West Coast Path (the 13-mile run from Bigbury to Salcombe is all in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and said to be one of the most spectacular of all the path's 630 miles). Steam along on the South Devon Railway, the longest established steam railway in the south west, for a less strenuous sightsee for over six and a half miles from Totnes to Buckfastleigh, mostly along the River Dart. Anglers can cast off for carp in the area around Holsome, while Pennywell Farm, Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, Dartmoor Zoological Park and Totnes Rare Breeds Farm should occupy all ages enthusiastic about animals.
