  • Peaceful, basic farm site six kilometres from the Jurassic coast
  • A 10-minute drive to the nearest beach; half an hour from Lyme Regis
  • Farm garden café open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays; pub nearby
Looking to the Jurassic coast for clifftop trails? Fossil-hunting and a walk down The Cobb harbour in Lyme Regis? Fish and chips from a seaside kiosk alongside one of the bays? The back to basics site Church Farm is well-positioned for digging into the Jurassic coast (quite literally, if you count sandcastle building or fossil-hunting), as it's just half an hour's drive from Lyme Regis. Life is rather peaceful on this small, basic farm site in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The local fishing village of West Bay is 10 minutes’ drive away, so ready your tastebuds for fresh fish caught on a fishing trip or local produce from the twice-weekly market. Nicely, the beaches down in the town are family-friendly with shallow water for paddling. The beach area has all the makings of a good trip, including ice cream kiosks, rowing boats to hire for a paddle down the river Brit or RIB charters to go out to sea. Foodies won’t have too far to look if they time their visit right, as there’s a garden café on the farm open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. When it’s closed, there’s a food shop half an hour’s walk away, plus a fair few restaurants and cafés. If you need to rinse off sand or salt from the day, there’s a handy, simple amenities block on site. Perhaps shower off before ending the day with a leisurely stroll down one of the footpaths around the site, calling into the local pub (10 minutes’ walk away) on your route, of course.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Myself and my 2 children loved camping at church farm. It's a really basic site but that's a good thing. It's pretty much wild camping with a toilet block and shower. The views are amazing the children loved running around and playing. The owners were really helpful. Around good site.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Hosts are very chatty and informative. Views spectacular. There's fresh eggs and veg for sale. There were woodburners available and you could buy logs from the farmer. Nice walk into Bridport.

Disliked: Not so much a dislike, the toilets and showers are in a wooden shack but they are adequate and clean.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great location, 10 minutes from the beach and 6 minutes from the local supermarket. Simple facilities, hot showers. Scenic views.

Disliked: Facilities look tired and could do with more frequent cleaning. An additional bin, clearly signposted, would help, especially on a busy weekend.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The hosts were fantastic and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble but luckily we didn't need anything. Facilities were clean and working. Site was well kept. Views are fantastic and my daughter loved the 'nay-bouring' horses! 100% will return

Disliked: Nothing, it was perfect

Local attractions

From boating around the lagoon, hiring out a beach hut or looking over the heritage fossil displays, Charmouth beach (half an hour’s drive) is another bay within reach. There’s much to do at Lyme Regis (half an hour) too, from visiting a fossil museum to rummaging through rockpools or browsing art galleries around the town. While the Jurassic coast is known for its clifftops and beaches, there’s more than that around. There are nesting mute swans that reside over at Abbotsbury Swannery (half an hour). Pair your trip with a ticket into the Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens (20 minutes) to check out the exotic plants. Forde Abbey House and Gardens (35 minutes) is another spot inland, with entertainment in the form of a plant nursery, outdoor theatre and the Asian woodlands and prairie garden. Or, how about a critique of the local ales? There are brewery tours and tastings around the thatched Palmers Brewery (five minutes) in Bridport nearby the site.
