We can’t promise that a holiday park at Freshwater Beach in Bridport, Dorset has been around for hundreds of thousands of years, but the landscape surrounding it has for sure – it’s part of the anciently gorge Jurassic Coast’s stonkingly spectacular scenery, recently paraded to the world in the much-praised telly programme Broadchurch. If you too gazed at this scenery on your tellybox screen and vowed to be in the area as soon as poss, you might want to mull over a Jurassic Coast holiday at Freshwater Beach Holiday Park, right by its own private beach less than a mile from beautiful West Bay where Olivia Colman and David Tennant strolled the sands, and surrounded by the Jurassic Coast’s sandstone cliffs and Dorset countryside with grassy slopes. We can’t promise – and wouldn’t dare say – that the team running this family-friendly fun park have also been around for a very long time indeed, but they’ve been offering family holidays here for over 40 years so their knowledge of what makes holiday parks evolve is rock solid. Free family fun including face painting, competitions, events and stalking the Freshwater pirate Captain Blood starts from 10am and continues unto the evening in the licenced entertainment complex in high season (the Easter holidays and from the spring bank holiday until September) with cabaret, live bands, magicians, fancy dress parties, bingo, karaoke, late night disco… All entertainment is included in the pitch price, along with access to the facilities/ entertainment of the Jurassic Fun Centre and three indoor pools with fun slides and a gym, hot tub and sauna for over 16s; the only extra charge is for ten-pin bowling. Staying on site to eat, drink and be merry? Bed down at the Bedrock Cafe and Takeaway or among the sea views of the Rolling Stone terrace bar and restaurant. And don’t want your hair to emerge monstrously on your Jurassic Coast holiday during eats, drinks or anything else? The Freshwater Beach Holiday Park salon Envy is there to the rescue. Also on site – we did say the Freshwater Beach Holiday Park team’s knowledge of what guests want is rock solid – are a couple of outdoor play areas, amusement arcade, launderette, takeaway, wifi and a well-stocked shop with off-licence, daily newspapers, groceries and camping accessories. All pitches come with electric hook-up and car parking alongside.

Local attractions

Sun zealots, sea anglers, watersports worshippers, swimmers and havers of hikes and heritage have a mammoth amount of things to see and do nearby and in surrounding Dorset. Nearby West Bay, and Weymouth a little along the coast to the south-east, are well-known watersports havens for surfers, sailors and windsurfers more from their first-class beaches; afterwards, dry off at one of the towns’ well-known restaurants like West Bay’s Riverside Restaurant or Weymouth’s award-winning and family-friendly The Dining Room. The market town of Bridport is the closest town to Freshwater Beach Holiday Park and about a mile away: for its size, it’s an attractively arty draw for painters, actors and their ilk and includes a funded arts centre with year-round events, exhibitions and films. The centuries-old street market in town is also pretty colourful; go here on Wednesdays and Saturdays to buy fresh produce, clothes, plants, paintings, books and antiques. If you’re on the Jurassic Coast to fossil hunt – essential if you have children along – go on to Lyme Regis, home of the annual fossil festival and the award-winning Lyme Regis Museum. Book a fossil walk from here to get free entry to the fossil finds and exhibitions of the museum afterwards. Dorset has a mammoth amount of other stuff to do for kids too, including aquariums, petting farms, gardens and play centres and aquariums at Lyme Regis and the Sea Life at Weymouth. Non-Dorset dwellers live 12 miles from Bridport at the Axe Valley Wildlife Park (meerkats, lemurs and many more) and at Wareham’s award-winning Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre which has six daily talks and is open every day of the year apart from Christmas Day. Weymouth’s Abbotsbury Swannery, the only managed colony of nesting mute swans in the world, also has an acclaimed children’s farm with guinea pigs, ponies, undercover play area, tractor rides and lamb racing daily at midday.
