  • Eco-friendly Dorset site with peaceful valley views
  • A 10-minute drive from Charmouth or Lyme Regis; Abbotsbury 30 minutes
  • Shared kitchen, resident farm animals and woodland walks
Tending to these 12 gorgeous acres of Dorset countryside is a tough job, but someone's got to do it. At Monkton Wyld Court, those someones are a hardworking bunch of live-in volunteers who harvest the honey, make bounteous bales of hay and keep the livestock well fed and watered all year round. Stays at this outdoor education and sustainability hub are a fair bit more laidback while still staying true to the site's off-grid roots. The facilities here include a well-equipped communal kitchen, no-fuss composting toilets, an alfresco pizza oven and a shared firepit. This being a kid-friendly spot, there are also a few rope swings dangling from the trees. Within an hour's walk (or a 10-minute drive) of the Jurassic Coast, Monkton Wyld Court is in a secluded valley with inviting grounds that include terraced lawns, woodlands, a stream, reedbeds and a Victorian walled garden. The pitches are all flat and even, thanks in part to their past life as a grass tennis court. Barbecues can be set up here, and grub – grilled or otherwise – can be eaten on one of the site’s several handy picnic tables. Monkton Wyld Court is a 30-minute stroll from a friendly local pub, and Charmouth, where there's a wide sandy beach and plenty of places to stock up on food, is a 10-minute drive away.

Local attractions

Make sure to spend plenty of time in Lyme Regis (10 minutes' drive), whether that involves watching gulls cadging chips on the Cobb (the town's far-famed sea wall), exploring fossils on the beach and in the town's two archaeological museums or admiring fish as they glide past at the aquarium. Grownup guests might also appreciate a locally-brewed tipple at Lyme Regis Brewery. Equally close by is Charmouth (10 minutes), home to the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre (a great place to get your bearings), a target sports centre where hot shots can practise their skills and a treetop high ropes course. Those in your entourage keen on examining birds and beasts have several options hereabouts. Closest to base is Axe Valley Wildlife Park (10 minutes), a favourite with families where the kids can make friends with meerkats and chat with the chipmunks. Abbotsbury Swannery (30 minutes), meanwhile, is where to head to see masses of mute swans, which have been reared on this site since medieval times. Finally, drive out to Wildwood Escot (30 minutes) if you're on the hunt for a zoo with a few extras attached (including zipwires, trampolines, mazes and more).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Staff were friendly and it was very isolated

Disliked: There were a few pitches cramped together in what was possibly a garden. The facilities were way less than basic. I was unable to even go into the sole toilet it was that bad

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautifully kept site within an eco sustainable living centre. Extremely useful communal cooking facilities with 6 hobs and oven, use of gas, oil and salt included. Warm outdoor shower, ideal for rustic campers. Award-winning eco composting toilets to ensure your waste does not go to waste. Met lots of lovely people and our children loved making friends and playing with other kids on the campsite especially on the tree swing! Nice atmosphere, camp fires, friendly. Extremely economic. Within short drive of main Jurrasic coast beaches.
