  • Peaceful paddock surrounded by fields on the edge of a quiet village
  • Central to the Jurassic Coast and 15 minutes' drive from the sea
  • Lots of space for kids to play; three-minute walk to the local pub
A pretty paddock surrounded by fields on the edge of a village is the name of the game here: behind a greystone farmhouse in Dorset, the bell tents at Higher Lewell Farmhouse are settled comfortably away from the action. The site is central to the Jurassic Coast's spectacular seas and cliffs, 20 minutes from Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door and under 40 minutes from Burton Bradstock, Charmouth, Lyme Regis, Chesil beach, Studland, Sandbanks, Swanage and Kimmeridge. It's also 20 minutes from Monkey World and the Tank Museum. The exceptionally roomy field at Higher Lewell has plenty of parking space, heaps of room for kids to play in (using some of the treats in the site's box full of toys) and more than enough space for your outdoor furniture, barbecue and whatever else you decide to bring to furnish your new home. In the field close to the pitches is a camping kitchen with a fridge/freezer, microwave, toaster, kettle and charging points for phones; crockery and cutlery are provided, along with tea, coffee and sugar. Two toilets and two showers (both plumbed into the mains) are up here too. Friendly dogs are more than welcome, but the site owners require that visiting dogs are completely comfortable and happy with cats, chickens and other people and dogs. If you're partial to a pint or want to know where you can relieve yourself of barbecue duties and tuck into some tasty pub grub, then you're in luck: Higher Lewell is a very handy three-minute walk from its nearest local inn, where you can enjoy a tipple or two alongside good meals, all while taking in some smashing sunset views out on the terrace. The pub can cook you breakfast if you want to tuck in before a day of Dorset sightseeing. Slightly further afield, there are also heaps of good eats to be had around central Dorchester, with lots of popular big eateries around Brewery Square and takeaways aplenty. Several more restaurants and pubs are at Weymouth harbour, 15 minutes' drive away, and several more pubs serving food are within a 15-minute drive at most.

Studland bell tent

Liked: Lovely small campsite which suited us perfectly. Great location. The children played with the other children on the site, which was lovely. The kids games tent was a bonus. Good showers and toilets.

Disliked: Didn’t dislike anything only issues, which were very minor, was the lights in our tent didn’t work and the kettle didn’t have the limescale guard.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I really am so sorry the lights in your tent didnt work. Sometimes the batteries run out after we have checked them. I have plenty more and if you had let me know i could have given you some. I also apologise there was no limescale guard, thank you for letting me know, i will replace this.

Lulworth bell tent

Liked: Fantastic campsite! The owner is so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Just seven bell tents so a lovely atmosphere where you can get to know other campers. Great yurt and games for the kids, clean showers and toilets and a well-equipped kitchen. Fire pits and fairy lights were a great touch and the peaceful location was perfect for us.

Disliked: Nothing!

Liked: Comfortable large mattress, Great hot showers, lots of fridge space, flat camping, large fire pits, good base to explore from, wonderful host

Disliked: Boy racers in the middle of the night near by!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Nina i am so sorry to hear about the boy racers in the middle of the night, and no idea where they would have been as we are a long way from a main road. So happy you enjoyed the rest of your trip and looking forward to seeing you next year.

Studland bell tent

Liked: Excellent find on Pitch up.com Lovely little campsite with only 7 Bell tents. We stayed in 'Studland'. Good value for money. We booked 3 of the 7 tents for our group of families for a 2 night stay. Double bed in each tent. We took air beds for the kids. Toilets, showers and a shared kitchen on site with fridge, freezer, toaster, kettle plates etc. A yurt for the kids to play in filled with toys and games. Outdoor toys and a football goal. Lovely quiet location. Weather was horrendous so we found the local pub (only a 2 min walk luckily). Site owner very friendly and helpful. Child and dog friendly. Will definately stay again!

Weymouth bell tent

Liked: Everything - communications pre-arrival good and open, welcome on site was warm, flexibility shown in accommodating us which was most welcome. Most importantly from getting there through to leaving we loved our time on site and the location being so close to numerous things to do. Other families staying there seemed similarly v happy and it was a friendly easy-going atmosphere with kids playing together, camp fires lighting up the night sky, etc. Definitely check out the New Inn for their carvery if you’re there on a Sunday - strongly recommended! Thank you again to Sophia and her family for a very comfortable, happy stay - we hope to be back before too long!

Studland bell tent

Liked: Everything. Sophia and Mike offered amazing service and real attention to detail making our stay brilliant. The campsite is lovely and immaculate. There was a really nice atmosphere. Lots of practical things have been thought of like kitchen equipment and games for the kids. Dorset itself was beautiful with lots to do. A week wasn’t long enough!

Local attractions

Your hosts are more than happy to plan days out for you before and during your visit – they're big fans of Dorset and are keen for you to see as many of the best bits as you can during your stay, so have stocked up on plenty of maps, leaflets and even created their own sightseeing itineraries to help their guests get the most out of the their stay. Particularly recommended in the area are Monkey World, the steam train to Swanage, Weymouth beach, Bovington Tank Museum, Kingston Maurward animal park, Farmer Palmers, Abbotsbury Sub-Tropical Gardens and Bridport's famous street markets. Buckets and spades of seaside opps are within easy reach of the site too: a 15-minute drive away, Ringstead is your nearest beach, and you're less than 30 minutes away from several other seaside towns and award-winning beaches such as Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door, Weymouth, Chesil Beach and Kimmeridge. Within an hour are Studland, Swanage, Sandbanks, West Bay, Charmouth and Lyme Regis; sea fishing trips can be arranged from Weymouth, Lyme Regis and West Bay. For a spot of history, Dorset County Museum in Dorchester centre regales visitors with the history of the area's iconic Jurassic coast, and Dorset and Devon Military Museum provides smashing views over the landscape from the top of its keep. The stately home of Athelhampton House and Gardens is five miles from base, and the ruins of Corfe Castle lie a 20-minute drive away. Other options are the biggest Iron Age hill fort in Europe, Maiden Castle two miles away; Thomas Hardy’s cottage and Max Gate (Thomas Hardy’s permanent home) both within five miles, and the Keep Military Museum in Dorchester, with spectacular views over the surrounding countryside.
