  • Small and quiet farm with miles of walks all around
  • Half an hour's drive from the Jurassic Coast
  • Modern facilities, fishing ponds and campfires allowed
Farm the crew out to Moonfleet Farm if you fancy a small and quiet place set in the Dorset countryside, with room for the kids to exhaust their energy among the fields and designated walking areas to let the dog off the lead. You might also rather fancy the 10-minute walk direct from the farm along the 'smugglers' footpath' to the local village shop and pub, then home to settle down in front of a roaring campfire for food and sunset vistas over the distant Blackmore Vale… Moonfleet is a working sheep farm on the western edge of the village of Higher Ansty, quiet and rural enough for a peaceful getaway, but easily accessible to main Dorset attractions and about half an hour from the Dorset coast. It has miles of local walks snaking through its surroundings, and fishing ponds on site at which to land rudd, roach, barbel, crucian carp, tench and perch. Day and weekly fishing tickets can be bought from the team. The farm has modern amenities including a shower and toilet block with underfloor heating and hairdryers, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point, drinking water taps and a laundry room with a free washing machine and a coin-operated tumble dryer. Showers, the hairdryers and wifi are all free.

Liked: Amazing site, with lovely clean facilities, and local information to hand. Only a short walk to a lovely pub, and the campsite itself had stunning views, lovely fishing lake and stunning dark sky for star gazing. Fire Pits allowed for the authentic camping experience Will definitely visit again.

Electric optional grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Fairly level pitches, although our friends had to use levellers for their motorhome. Loved the rheas, geese and ducks. Nice quiet site, very friendly owners. Several water taps around the site, so never far away. Free WiFi, although seemed a bit patchy in the evenings.

Disliked: Toilet bowls could do with a good clean with bleach.

Liked: Lovely site very relaxed, pitches were big and had lots of stuff for the kids. The owners were super friendly and helpful. The electric did keep tripping out, which was annoying but overall a lovely site and we would definitely go again.

Electric optional grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful surroundings, lovely owls hooting at night, great star gazing, good facilities if they were clean, large level pitches

Disliked: Soft muddy pitches, lots of wasps, dirty facilities (they weren't cleaned in the 5 days we were here), dogs barking throughout the night (guests fault really), the limestone track gets everywhere on shoes and is hard to clean. The electric pitch charge is very steep for a tent stay. Onsite firewood was damp and didn't light.

From the manager: This is a disappointing review especially as the camper made no mention of any complaints while on site. We've had heavy rainfall and some pitches are muddy where tents have been pitched for a week or more. We coned off pitches we considered unsuitable, however, this camper drove through the cones onto a muddy pitch. They were offered an alternative, drier pitch, but declined. Our toilets are cleaned, without fail, at least twice a day, three times if considered necessary, but are only as clean as left by the last user. We have signs asking for campers to contact us in the event of the facilities not being clean. Where there is food, there will be wasps at this time of year. Campers need to manage their own food storage, wasps really are out of our control. Is £6/night excessive for hook up? Based on our overheads we don't think so. In addition to power we've had to pay for installation, breakages and ongoing annual inspections. All in all, we consider this to be an unreasonable review where we weren't given a chance to rectify issues which could have been addressed.

Local attractions

The walks around Moonfleet Farm along local lanes and through scenic Dorset countryside lead to the likes of pretty local village Milton Abbas, Milton Abbey, Athelhampton House, Cerne Abbas and sending the kids into fits of giggles when they spy mighty chalk Cerne Giant etched into the hillside. Arf. A heap of other Dorset history is a little further afield, such as that at the former Saxon cathedral of Sherborne Abbey, or at historic houses and gardens, abbeys and churches. Also go for Corfe Castle on the Isle of Purbeck and potter around the county town of Dorchester with the Dinosaur Museum, Dorchester Museum, Teddy Bear Museum, Tutankhamen Exhibition and the Roman Amphitheatre. (Have a look at the Thomas Hardy Trail and weekly market in Dorchester too.) Wareham, Swanage, Weymouth, and Salisbury are easily accessible by car and have enough to do to keep you going for several weeks; among our many recommendations are puffing along on award-wining and steamy Swanage Railway, seeing Salisbury's splendid cathedral, wandering around the RSPB reserve at Weymouth or hiking the 15 or so miles of the spectacular Purbeck Way. Fishing fan? Investigate the waters around the harbours of Poole and Weymouth.
