  • In secluded woodland half an hour’s drive from the Jurassic Coast
  • A 10-minute drive from Wimborne and 15 from Poole and Kingston Lacy
  • Firepit barbecues, honesty fridge freezer and stargazing on site
Obsessed with planning every single detail of your hols? At Stoney Down Plantation Camping, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from Poole on Dorset’s south coast, no one will be able to accuse you of not seeing the wood for the trees... In 130 acres of secluded woodland, this is a top spot for switching off and letting the days unfold how they will. Hours will be well spent wandering the paths and trails of this private forest, and give a nice taster of what’s beyond the site – the walks, bikes and pony treks of the New Forest are 25 minutes away, and Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is 15 minutes from base for more of the same. If sandy stretches appeal more than towering trees, turn feet instead towards the famed Jurassic Coast. Pick up the 630-mile South West Coast Path about 45 minutes from the site, or hang up the walking boots and pick up the swimsuit instead; the fab beaches of Poole and Sandbanks are about 25 minutes away and you may care to know too that Dorset gets more hours of sunshine than the UK average... Back on site, there’s plenty of shaded shelter, and firepit barbecues dotted around to supply hot eats and a little cosiness if the weather turns. An honesty fridge freezer is stocked with essentials. Ready for a peaceful evening? Lay claim to one of the outdoor seating areas and turn eyes skywards – Cranborne Chase is currently campaigning for International Dark Sky Reserve recognition, so the stargazing here won’t disappoint.

Local attractions

History buffs are well served round here: two National Trust sites – a pretty 18th-century cornmill called White Mill, and the palatial Kingston Lacy House and Gardens – are within 15 minutes’ drive, Bovington Tank Museum is about half an hour from base, and Stonehenge is an hour away. Closer at hand, the Saxon church of Wimborne Minster (10 minutes) is well worth a visit: a church has sat on this site for more than 1,300 years, and the present version houses one of the world’s last surviving chained libraries. Stick around Wimborne at weekends to visit the largest undercover market in the south of England, where there are stalls bursting with food, flowers, jewellery, antiques and collectables. Move on then to Poole (15 minutes away), Europe’s largest natural harbour, to nab a berth on boat tours to spy out dolphins or to visit Brownsea Island for more wildlife watching. Fancy seeing some less sea-bound animals instead? Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre is 25 minutes from base.
