  • Quiet, family-friendly and rural site in a wildlife haven
  • Spectacular countryside views
  • Firepits for guests' use and two large barbecues available to hire
Your 'darling buds' will blossom at Primrose Fields in Dorset. This small and friendly site just outside of Wareham is only about a mile from famed ape rescue centre Monkey World, three miles from the Bovington Tank Museum and a short drive from spectacular Lulworth Cove on the Jurassic Coast. There are great walking and cycling routes from the site, such as the Frome Valley trail, the Hardy Way and the National Cycle Route 2. Make the most of starry nights and campfires on the peaceful wildflower meadow, which has views of Dorset heathland. Set up base by venerable oak trees and let the children play on the rope swing or chase butterflies. There are wild surroundings, but with the comfort of clean and well-maintained facilities. Pitches at Primrose Fields aren't set, so you can make your camp anywhere in the wildlife meadow, picking a spot by the forest or one with heathland views. Most of the field is flat for easy pitching. Walkers, cyclists, watersporters, couples, families and kids are all welcome on site. Campfires are allowed within firepits, with sustainably sourced wood and charcoal available to buy. Firepits and large barbecues are available for use on site. For food and supplies, nearby Wareham has a good selection of shops, cafés and pubs. A café and farm shop is about a mile away and a pub is next to the site.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The staff were very friendly and the site was clean. Liked that there are no set pitches as it allowed everyone to be spread out. The washing up facilities were good and the campsite provided fire pits and wood for a reasonable price.

Disliked: The showers and toilets were the porta-cabin style which was unexpected but they were clean.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: .

Disliked: Me and my partner came down as a young couple as we didn’t have our daughter for the night . Our rescue dog parked once when my partner left to get something and she was complaining even tho we had a couple next to us making noise all night but that was ok . Ten pound for a fire which was very nice but make you pay extra for wood that actually works

From the manager: It looks like there have been some misunderstandings here - young couples are of course very welcome and hopefully readers can see that from other reviews. The dog in fact got loose and got to a family pitch with food and young children around, so I asked that the dog be controlled and I offered to lend a rope if needed. Running a dog friendly site safely does depend on owners looking after their dogs properly and thankfully most do. People are on holiday here catching up with friends and family, so there will be some noise and chat during the evening, we do keep an eye on it and intervene if we think anything is over the top. Do come and see us if any other pitch is causing a nuisance. Finally we hire a firepit with a large bag of well seasoned logs for £10. You will most likely need some kindling to start the logs burning, which we also sell and we are always happy to come and help anyone with starting their fire if they haven’t much experience.

Fantastic 3 night stay!

Local attractions

What a lot there is to do around this Wareham-based site, including many options without even having to fire up the car engine: the Frome Valley Trail is close to hand and the quiet country lanes around these parts are just the ticket for gentle cycling. The Bovington Tank Museum and the Jurassic Coast are both easily accessible from the site. Take a picnic or a catch of local fish and chips down to the grassy riverbank opposite the quay in Wareham for a restful afternoon, or wander around the town's Saxon defence walls for views in all directions. Another good walk is the Two Rivers route down to the backwaters of Poole Harbour, but if you’d rather get out on the water than look at it, you can hire a canoe, kayak or paddleboard for lazy drifting up the Frome. If you do decide to drive, the fab beaches, countryside and attractions of Purbeck and West Dorset are a short distance away. There's also the birdwatching and nature spotting of the RSPB Arne nature reserve just south of Wareham; splendid old Corfe Castle a 10-minute drive from there, and a steam train from the castle surrounds to the seaside resort and sandy beach of Swanage. North of Swanage is the sandy National Trust-managed Studland Bay.
