  • Jurassic Coast farm site 15 minutes' drive from Weymouth
  • Farm shop serving food and pub with garden within 1-2 minutes' stroll
  • Well-spaced pitches and spotless facilities
What a spectacularly well set site this is… do try your best to settle in for quite some time… Portesham Dairy Farm Camp Site is in peaceful Dorset countryside on the Jurassic Coast (week one of your hol) and easily accessible to Weymouth, Dorchester and the Dorset beaches: that should cover weeks two and three… Your eats and drinks are excellently sorted from here too, as a farm shop with café is a minute's amble from the site, and the owners' local, the King's Arms, is within a couple of minutes' stroll. The site is on the edge of the village of Portesham, in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and 15 minutes' drive from Weymouth. It's family run with a dedicated team that takes pride in its modern clean amenities: the purpose-built facilities block comes with toilets, showers, basins, hairdryers and hand dryers, baby changing area and an enclosed washing-up space with hot and cold water. There's also a laundry room (with drinks machine and tourist info), as well as three chemical disposal points across the site. A small play area is to hand for kids. The site welcomes quiet and friendly dogs; a footpath leads from the farm across fields and countryside.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (small)

Liked: Just returned back from a lovely weekend in our camper van the first of the season. The toilet facilities are immaculate, we used the main block but on our previous stay was closer to the cabin toilets which were also clean. On arrival we drove straight to our pitch through the automatic barrier no need to be shown where to park. We personally prefer this to having to be shown to your pitch but people are about and the lady on reception did check we were okay and was very friendly. The on sight milk and food vending machines are a great touch, there is also a coffee machine and fresh orange juice. The dog exercise are is large and wasn’t muddy even though we visited in march after a lot of rain. Pitches are large and the site is very peaceful close to Weymouth and Portland. In the village is a pub which serves great food and is dog friendly. We didn’t book but they managed to squeeze us in they are also very friendly in there. There is farm shop which sell local produce and cafe. Just note that this isn’t dog friendly but the cafe does offer takeaway. This is our second visit and won’t be our last.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch (medium, semi-serviced)

Liked: Portesham Dairy Farm site is one of the best we have stayed on. Great value for money. The toilets, showers, laundry and wash up have been built and maintained to the highest standards, even the demountable toilets and bathrooms are of high quality. There self service vending shop was a really neat idea, even though we didn't use it. We promise ourselves a milkshake from the vending machine, but we didn't manage to get it sorted, so we will just have to come back and get that rectified! The pitches are well set out with plenty of space between. It was our 3rd visit and it won't be our last. On a bus route, with a nearby farm shop and pub. What's not to like!!

Disliked: nothing!

Concrete pitch on entrance fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: We arrived late and were able to pitch up on one of the 'forecourt' pitches which suited us just fine. Close to the onsite facilities which were kept spotless by the cheerful and welcoming staff. The site was also just a short walk to the pub for dinner and the cafe for breakfast. The Old Mill was a really useful addition to the site too.

Disliked: It got a bit busy on the 'forecourt' at departure time with people emptying their grey waste which of course is unavoidable but other than that it was all good.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the kind review and recommendation. We are so glad that the forecourt pitch was fine for your stay and look forward to seeing you all again.

Local attractions

However long you stay here (at least a couple of weeks, preferably), there's enough to see and do around Dorset to entertain all ages and tastes. Ditch the car if you prefer: the local bus stop is 150 yards from the farm entrance, to pick up the Jurassic Coast route bus (X53) running from Exeter to Poole. The Portesham Dairy Farm team recommends a climb up to the Hardy Monument on Black Down (five minutes' drive) as a nifty way to see Dorset and its splendid coastline (the monument isn't to the writer Thomas Hardy as you might expect in these parts, but to Vice Admiral Thomas Hardy, a commander at the Battle of Trafalgar; do be sure to tell that to the kids). You should be able to see the Devon coast, the Mendip Hills and the Isle of Wight from here on a clear day; just clamber the 120 steps up to the viewpoint. Also much recommended is Abbotsbury, home of the famed swannery as well as subtropical gardens and a kids' farm (also five minutes' drive), and the golden sands, sand sculptures and fair rides of Weymouth, 15 minutes from the farm. Portland (25 minutes) is also a must: visit the lighthouse, forage for fossils and come down the hill from the top of town for stunning views of the coast and Chesil Beach.
