Hiking or hacking? Family-run Rosewall is set among the spectacular scenery of the Jurassic Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty five miles east of Weymouth, on the seam of both inland and coastal walking routes and with the Rosewall Equestrian riding school on the doorstep for riders of all abilities. Of course, you might want to cast off instead at the fishing waters close to the site – the one and a half-acre Wally’s Lake set in a wooden valley with carp, roach, tench and bream to be landed by all levels of angler (you’ll need your licence; to pick up a day ticket at reception or at the stables, and all your own kit including a 36" landing net and a unhooking mat). Or break out the paintbox: Rosewall has fab views over Osmington Bay and the Dorset countryside, and is in the hamlet of Osmington Mills, set on canvas by Constable on several occasions who spent his honeymoon in the area; it’s a quick scramble from the site to the rockpools and beach of Osmington Bay. Rosewall has a 13-acre camping field, two modern toilet and shower blocks with hairdryer and shaver points, and washing-up facilities. The park also has a laundry room, shop and disabled facilities. Two pubs serving food are within walking distance.

Route directions

Rosewall is half a mile from the Osmington Mills turning, off the A353. Approaching from Wareham on the A352, take the first exit on the Warmwell roundabout signposted A353 Weymouth and Osmington. Approaching Osmington, take the first left opposite to the garage and proceed in the direction of Rosewall. You will find us on the right, past the riding stables. X53 bus route to Weymouth stops at the Osmington Mills junction on the A353 opposite the garage.

Local attractions

Within a couple of minutes of Rosewall, hunt for fossils on the Osmington shoreline or get watery with the snorkelling, surfing and other sports available at Ringstead Bay; both options are available all around the Dorset coast too. Weymouth has a sheltered beach and 17th-century harbour to coast around as well as loads more watersports and old-fashioned seaside stuff like donkey rides. For slightly more sophisticated fare, get the tills ringing at the town's regular markets, the smart shops of New Bond Street, St Thomas Street and St Mary Street, and the smaller more specialist outlets of St George Street and St Alban Street. The literati will know that Dorset is Thomas Hardy as well as fossil and watersports land: Dorchester, Dorset’s county town, is 15 minutes inland from Weymouth and has Hardy’s old cottage, Max Gate. More modernly, Dorchester has several museums including the Dinosaur Museum; top shops, restaurants and pubs; and theatre, events and music run by Dorchester Arts. Bournemouth, with even more of the same, is about an hour’s drive from Weymouth.
