  • Secluded site available for exclusive bookings
  • Half an hour's drive from Jurassic Coast beaches and walks
  • Meadow glamping with campfires allowed and private bathrooms
Here’s a little Somerset smasher. Driftaway Camping Woodlands is a small and secluded site five minutes’ drive from Chard: so petite, in fact, that you and your group can hire the whole place out to have this sweet rural retreat all to your deserving selves. Comfy but down-to-earth quarters are ready and waiting for guests as they arrive, and all kitted out too… so folk can throw their bags down, get out and explore a comely site of meadow and woodland: there's a stream to follow too, and a pond that’s home to newts and frogs. This isn't the place for you if you require posh trappings like fancy ovens and ensuite bathrooms; instead keep up the Famous Five vibe in the evenings with campfire cookouts. (Although if you fancy a rest, your friendly proprietors will deliver freshly cooked meals to your fireside, or knock up picnics for daytime wanderings). And what might those wanderings include? The local area has surfing, swimming and fossil digging on the beaches, hill walks and cliff climbs, journeys through the ancient and more recent history of the West Country, and encounters with deer and meerkats: you’ll certainly be busy…

Safari tent

Liked: We stayed in the safari tent for 2 nights with our 5 yr old granddaughter. We were greeted on arrival by Liz and Nigel and they showed us the facilities, which were spotlessly clean. Very friendly couple and nothing was too much trouble. Liz allowed our granddaughter to collect eggs from the chickens which was definitely the highlight of the weekend for her ! The tent is lovely with a very comfy bed , a gas hob and kettle and complimentary logs for the log burner in the tent and the camp fire outside. Also marshmallows to toast on the fire. The place is secluded so you feel like your in the middle of nowhere but Chard is just down the road if supplies are needed We had a lovely time and will definitely be back Thank you Liz and Nigel. Liked: Everything! Facilities were totally fine for a wild camp stay, the yurt was really well kitted out and cosy. Loads of space for the children to play and rope swings. The dog was able to run free and the hosts were delightful and helpful and kind.

Safari tent

Liked: Stayed in the safari tent with my two children 13 and 20. Everything was ready when we arrived, with everything we could need. Wash room and toilet very clean, not far to walk at all - def need torch for a 4am trip to the loo! There are plug sockets in the wash room for charging phones. The site is very well maintained. The yurt and sarafi tent are set with enough space apart so we couldn't hear the other guests or get in each others way. Liz and Nigel were very welcoming and helpful. Gave us our space and there if needed. I specifically chose this site for my son who's autistic, and he liked the calmness and privacy it offered. It felt very safe. Would absolutely recommend.

Yurt

Liked: We had a lovely stay at Driftaway camping, the amenities are second to none; lovely Yurt to stay in and great shower facilities. Sleeping in the forest at night was an exciting experience and the children really enjoyed playing on the swings and exploring around the place. Liz and Nigel were lovely and helpful hosts and we all felt very looked after on the premises. Would heartily recommend.

Safari tent

Liked: Wow! We loved our week at Driftaway Campsite. Just me as a single mum and my 13 year old son. We stayed in the safari tent and felt safe and well looked after the whole time Brilliant facilities. Lots of space and privacy. Beaches, walking, cycling, camp fires, bats, deer and chickens! We would absolutely go again. Liz and Nigel have done a fantastic job and were so kind to us, helping my son adjust his bike, to offering us fresh eggs. Marie

Safari tent

Liked: Beautiful surroundings, private and everything needed was provided for a great weekend glamping. We all had a lovely time, from making our own camp fire, cooking on the camping stove to playing in the meadow. The food we ordered from Liz (Nigel was at Glastonbury) was amazing and worth the extra! Would recommend and go again!

Disliked: Nothing, a bit more sun would have been nice!

Safari tent

Liked: Gorgeous location, beautiful set up, Liz and Nigel couldn’t do enough to help us. Dogs and kids adored it and were off into the woods at all moments. Unless the fire was going. When we realised we had misjudged the April chill, Liz came over with extra blankets and a hot water bottle. And did I mention the brownies??? We will be back!

Local attractions

The pretty flint and stone town of Chard, five minutes’ drive away, is your nearest port of call for shops, pubs and eateries. The museum is also worth a mooch, not least for the tale of local inventor John Stringfellow, whose steam aeroplane was the first vehicle to fly under its own power way back in 1848. Head further back in time at Dinosaurland Fossil Museum in Lyme Regis, and top it off with digging up your own ammonites and scaphites on Charmouth beach. For coastal walks interrupted by swims and paddles, Axmouth to Lyme Regis is a fine stretch that's home to birds and wildflowers, and occasionally swathed in sea mists. All are half an hour's drive from the site. Sidle over to Seaton, also within half an hour, if you’d prefer to see the sea from the comfort of an old electric tram, or trek across the nature-filled marshlands alongside the River Axe on a well-signed boardwalk. To view the coast from the crest of a wave Jacob’s Ladder beach outside Sidmouth (45 minutes) is where the surfers do it. Thrillseekers can screech their hearts out at the rides, go-karts and splash zone at Crealy Adventure Park (45 minutes) as well as taking more sedate trips on the miniature train, and meeting the meerkats for cute and furry encounters.
