  • Small and friendly site at the top of the Mendips
  • Three miles from Cheddar and within walking distance of several pubs
  • Surrounded by woodland: look out for deer, badgers, foxes and buzzards
Small, simple, in a wildlife haven, welcoming families and well-behaved dogs, surrounded by all sorts of activities, and on the Mendip Pub Trail – how many hurrahs could you give The Batch Campsite? (Quite a few more, it turns out – it's only three miles from splendid Cheddar.) The Batch is rightly popular with wild camping and quiet holiday types, who come for its scenic location (especially fine at sunset), its closeness to Cheddar and the things to do nearby such as hiking, mountain biking, climbing and caving… It's surrounded by woodland, so watch out for deer, badgers and buzzards too. The site is on the end of a bumpy unadopted private road at the top of the Mendips and has been deliberately set up in simple style so that guests can experience a wild camping vibe in a safe space. Campfires are allowed – naturally – and Tim and team can help you fire one up for cooking if you need a hand. The team can also provide a range of local produce to cook up your own meals including trout, sausages, bacon, eggs, ribs, cheese and cider (all from within a three-mile radius): let them know when you arrive or drop them a note in the Special requests box after booking. And yet more hurrahs: The Batch is within easy walking distance of several Somerset pubs, all pulling gallons of local beers and ciders alongside some dishing up some right good pub food. Most of the neighbouring farms make their own cider, but you can also walk down to the Thatchers cider farm. The Batch facilities include a toilet block, fridge-freezer and a washing-up area; please note that showers aren't currently available for wild camping guests.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Realy beautiful place to stay at the top of the hill overlooking the sea and the brecon beacons. Tim was really understanding and helpful. I booked the wrong date and he let me change it. He brought me an egg from the chickens in the morning for breakfast. The campsite is really peaceful and it's close to the gorge which is also beautiful

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Plenty of space, good views and hospitable host. There are plenty of walks nearby and pubs a short walk down the hill. In terms of layout, there is a small field at the top with 8 large pitches, note no electric hookups or wifi, this site is great if you want to get back to bssics. Down the hill there is a barn with a couple of section off rooms either end containing porterpotties. There is an outside sink with clean running water. Further down the hill there are hens, swings and hammocks. The grounds are beautiful and very peaceful

Disliked: For us the portapotties was not an issue however I can see how some more modern families may struggle.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Glad you had a good time despite the rain. To be fair the portapotties are rarely an issue and blend in with our almost off grid and almost wild camping vibe. Hope to see you again.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely gorgeous site with stunning views. Tim was very knowledgeable about the local area, recommending walks and places to eat and drink. If you're looking a site with no frills but a relaxed and welcoming feel, then this is it, even my 14 year old son managed to put his phone down for a while to go exploring. We'll definitely be returning in the Spring

From the manager: So glad you all had a good time. Thank you for a lovely review. See you again.

Batch Belle bell tent

Liked: Friendly welcoming host, very knowledgeable of local area and plenty of recommendations. Beautiful location with views over to Wales surrounded by wildlife. We stayed in a pre-pitched Bell tent that was clean and tidy inside. Basic cooking tools and camping chairs was provide which we didn't expect. Feel the pre-pitched tent is really good value and excellent for those unable to transport all the equipment needed for camping.

Disliked: We didn't realise the toilets would be caravan toilets In stable blocks which my friends struggled with... however they were always clean and maintained. They were far better than any festival toilets I've been in just a little on the very basic side.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: WE do make it clear on all the websites we use that this is "almost wild camping". I'm sorry your friends were unaware we use caravan style toilets. We'll try and make sure it's more obvious in our descriptions.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: A hidden gem. Great view. Lots to do nearby. Beautiful area. Loved the pub at the bottom of the lane. This is definitely a wild camping experience. Portaloos one cold running tap and no showers. So if u was expecting something else u will be dissatisfied. It's back to the bare basics. Great price.

Disliked: The bad rockey rough terrain that is supposed to be a road leading up to the site. Proceed with caution. Unsuitable for low cars of any kind. 4x4's is all it's really suitable for.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Just to add a couple of points. We are "almost wild camping" not wild camping - we have simple toilets, solar showers, drinking water, firepits and logs for all. Loving the toilet photos! WE are actually quite nice and safe. We do warn everyone about the road. It is perfectly safe if you take it slowly which helps you transition to our campsite.. We don't have 4x4 cars. Two wheel drive is fine. Just a word of warning though as everything gets very dry, do ensure the ashes of any fires you have are cold and preferably soaked. We have had a couple of campers think their fire has been put out only to find it alight again after a few hours.

Local attractions

The small farm of The Batch Campsite is between a National Trust woodland and a Bronze Age settlement: you might already have heard that this part of Somerset is fairly historic… Cheese, gorge, caves and climbing are three miles away over the hill at Cheddar and Tim and co can provide instruction if you want to tackle any Cheddar or Mendip caving or climbing. It's full-on walking and hiking land here too, around the gorge and hills, the area's cider farms or the Mendip Way's 50 miles over the Mendip Hills from Weston-super-Mare to Frome. The Mendip Pub or Butcombe Trail is an agreeably scenic totter along 45 miles connecting six pubs owned by Butcombe Brewery and through Priddy, Axbridge, Bleadon, Rowberrow and Compton Martin. Yet more attraction and activity hurrahs are in the area, like seaside days at Weston-super-Mare, heritage at Wells Cathedral, Glastonbury Tor and medieval Axbridge, or a whizz down the slopes at the Avon Ski Centre.
