  • Peaceful pitches by a stream in the Exmoor National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Minehead and Dunkery Beacon
  • Wild-style camping with a village pub five minutes' walk away
Spacious, level pitches in a gorgeous Somerset valley, with a stream running past, starry skies overhead by night and (crucially) a pub five minutes’ walk away – it’s no wonder the folk at Willow Stream Camping suggest that this is wild camping at its best. The pub in question is in the village of Timberscombe, which also has a small shop/post office where guests can pick up necessities while they’re here (further supplies are available five minutes’ drive away in Dunster). As well as being handy for the village, this location also means that you can mix up coast and countryside as you wish – there are plenty of places to hike or ride mountain bikes nearby, and it’s a 10-minute drive to Minehead for beach time and coast walks. The surroundings here are those of Exmoor National Park, which means that the views are splendid by day and by night: this is an official dark sky area, so when the sun goes down those moorland vistas should be replaced by some impressive displays overhead (clouds permitting). You’re welcome to light campfires or firepits at Willow Stream to keep you warm as you wait for the stars to come out (and you can buy logs here to feed them with). Pitches here are wild in style but not entirely frill-free: guests have access to portable toilets, free hot showers, wash basins, drinking water, firepits and recycling waste bins.

Local attractions

Exploring Exmoor National Park is a breeze from here – head out to visit popular spots like Dunster Castle (five minutes’ drive) and Tarr Steps (25 minutes) or find a less busy corner for a quieter hike on your own. If you’re up for a climb, Dunkery Beacon – Exmoor’s highest point – is 10 minutes away. The national park runs all the way to the coast, of course, so you’ll want to get some seaside time in on the schedule too – perhaps taking in the beach and family activities in Minehead (10 minutes) or taking a paddleboard out from Porlock (20 minutes). There are more water-based activities (including fishing) at Wimbleball Lakes (20 minutes); meanwhile, for other local days out you could try the likes of Luckyard Farm (10 minutes) or have a ride on the West Somerset Railway (10 minutes).

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (wild)

Liked: Beautiful location, really gorgeous views, quiet, idyllic, FANTASTIC night skies. Small and very friendly, all facilities were regularly cleaned and in good condition. The shower was surprisingly good for a campsite! Campsite owner was super friendly and helpful. The location is also very handy, as there is a small village shop and a pub about 5 minutes' walk away, and it's very close to beautiful tourist areas like Dunster, beach at Minehead and so on. It was great to be able to easily purchase firewood and have a campfire. Very few midges etc. Pitches beautifully kept and level. No litter etc. Kids loved it. We're coming back next year!

Disliked: Nothing! Not even that many midges, considering there is a little stream not far away!

Riverside bell tent (six person)

Liked: The location of the riverside tent is really quiet and relaxing because of the water sounds. The tent was cosy and very well equipped for cooking and rainy days (which we didn't have). Making a campfire every night was great. The surroundings offer beautiful nature and old villages. Next time we could spend a week here easilly.

Disliked: The bed was a bit noisy , it squeaked and creaked when turning.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (wild)

Liked: We had a wonderful weekend, great location with beautiful surroundings. The children loved playing in the steam and we loved how close we were to everything. The owners were so welcoming and friendly & all the extra touches like the games, footballs etc were fab, the highlight was the amazing star gazing it really is unreal! We can’t wait to book again for next year!

Disliked: Two showers would be great but we had no problems with what is there at all and everything was extremely clean and well stocked.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (wild)

Liked: Nice spot

Disliked: Portaloo smell. Cold showers. Look it’s fine if you are minimalist but when it’s wet and you’ve been cycling and camping for days a few more comforts are required.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review, I am sorry you feel that way but the shower is hot its set at 38 degrees so that children can shower safely, portaloos are cleaned daily, you actually didn't book in or pay for your stay just a deposit! so I find this review rather disappointing.
