  • Quiet farmstead site with tree-lined and secluded pitching field

  • Shop on site with visitor information; firepits and logs available
All the best stuff happens on the borders. And Buttles Farm, in Somerset but a mere five minutes' drive away from Devon, is a prime example: a peaceful and secluded farmstead site in the Blackdown Hills, within 20 minutes' drive of the towns of Honiton and Taunton, surrounded by walking, cycling and horse riding trails, and with many equestrian centres within easy reach as well. Overlooking the Culm valley, pitches are peaceful, level and surrounded by farm pastures. The farm's residents include sheep, chickens and pigs, and the site owners grow cider apple varieties in the orchard. Amenities include a well-maintained sanitary block with toilets, washbasins and carbon-neutral showers, a fresh water supply and regular refuse collection. Barbecues and campfires are allowed on site. Five minutes' drive away there's a farm shop and a fine old inn with fresh food; bigger shops and supermarkets are easily reached in Honiton and Taunton. Although the splendid scener of the area will be hard to ignore, you're also handily placed for a quick hit of history: head five minutes in the car or take a pleasant half-hour hike over to Upottery Airfield to learn about World War Two from the West Country perspective, or make a 10-minute drive to 14th-century Hemyock Castle, sacked during the English Civil War.

Local attractions

The level plateau of the Blackdown Hills provides ample options for cycling and walking – just ask Carl, the friendly owner of Buttles Farm for his recommendations or to lend you a walking book. There's also a cracking good 13-mile circular walk at Castle Neroche (15 minutes' drive), through traditionally managed woodlands grazed by English Longhorn cattle up the broad vistas from the hilltops. If the heights of Neroche or your trip to the old airfield have your gaze fixed upwards, visit the aerodrome at Dunkerswell 15 minutes away for a microlight flying lesson or a skydive, or book yourself in for a 20-minute glider flight on selected days of the week at Devon and Somerset Gliding Club (20 minutes). Fear not though if you prefer your feet firmly on the ground, as the many views, walks, beaches and fossil-studded cliffs of the famed and UNESCO-protected Jurassic Coast are around 45 minutes' drive from the site. Make for elegant Lyme Regis to see the prehistoric treasures of the Dinosaurland Fossil Museum, then head round the coast to Charmouth beach and try hunting some fossils of your own. You could also hike the mighty South West Coast Path (all 630 miles of it, if you fancy) or head to West Bay for sandcastles and a high-speed boat ride out to sea.
