  • Small, friendly glampsite beside a bluebell wood in the Mendip Hills
  • On the edge of a working farm, a 10-minute drive to Chew Magna’s lake
  • A 20-minute drive from Cheddar Gorge and the cathedral city of Wells
Stays in scenic Somerset are particularly splendid when they’re at Nettwood Country Breaks, a friendly glampsite in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with top-notch views across the Chew valley and its lovely lake. Spectacular scenery is also visible from the accommodation units at this park a 20-minute drive from the small city of Wells, set as they are in thoughtful positions on the edge of the owners' working farm and next to a bluebell field. Units are placed close enough for families who want to be together, but well spaced enough to ensure a bit of privacy. For those with eagle eyes, wildlife is all around the spacious grounds as well – listen to birdsong from your private decking and look out for the deer that regularly roam the woods edging the site. While you’re ambling on these tree-lined paths, pick up fallen twigs for the campfire and barbecue (fires are allowed at this park) or just work up an appetite for supper at one of the two pubs serving food in the local village, which also has a shop. Legs need more stretching? Step out onto one of the local footpaths for rural wanders or test your fitness on the nearby cycle routes. Alternatively, get in the car and drive over to the famed village of Cheddar, 20 minutes away, for cave tours, climbing and clifftop hikes at the gorge (a must after indulging in all the cheese sold in the shops…) Two fishing lakes and a couple of local golf courses are also a short drive away.

Woodland Retreat camping pod

Liked: Where the pod, was situated was lovely with the woods behind. The facilities inside the pod were better than expected.

Disliked: There are two improvements I would make are, the first that there was a light switch by the bed for the main lights and second that the main lights had a dimmer switch because they were very bright. And unfortunately we had no WiFi where we were.

Woodland Retreat camping pod

Liked: Loved the personal interaction with site owners, who could not have been more helpful! The bed was super cosy and so pleased we had our own private area close by woodland and okay park, stove and microwave, fire pit, crockery, utensils, cleaning equipment, bins, futon sofa, fairy lights, loo and fire our and privacy blinds. Great den building, walking and cycling opportunities and and kids play area, sheep and llamas and incredible views!

Disliked: Couldn’t get connected to Wi-Fi. My daughter didn’t see anyone her own age but that’s luck of the draw. Great play area but only for ages up to 12.

Local attractions

For kid-friendly caverns, a play area, crazy golf and a lively circus, Wookey Hole (15 minutes’ drive) is the place to go; if you’re travelling sans small fry, the laidback city of Wells (just over 20 minutes) has grownup interestd sorted with its cathedral, twice-weekly traditional market and great pubs. For outdoor activities, Cheddar Reservoir is a half-hour drive away – head here to fish and boat, or aim for Chew Valley Lake (just over 10 minutes) if you’d rather birdwatch from the banks instead of getting out on the water. A touch further on from here are the Stanton Drew Circles and Cove (20 minutes’ drive); after checking out one of the biggest Neolithic monuments ever constructed, move onwards towards Bath (50 minutes) to admire the Georgian architecture and Roman-era hot springs.
