A child-free space to chill out surrounded by some scenic Somerset surrounds? What an excellent idea – even the most doting parents/grandparents need a bit of nipper-free time now and then... There’s a mighty peaceful vibe all around Wells Touring Park, where the order of the day may include such activities as strolling around the well-kept gardens, striking up friendly rivalries over a game of pétanque or croquet or settling in for a quiet drink while you read the paper (or a book from the phone box library) in the coffee lounge. Dogs are welcome to join you in such endeavours, and have their own dedicated corner of the park where they can stretch their paws and have a shower. The shower facilities for their human pals are rather fancier – in a smart, spacious block with an accessible wetroom, hairdryers and shaving points to keep all looking presentable, and underfloor heating to guard against chilly feet. A launderette (with washing machines and tumble dryers), open-air washing-up area and fresh water/grey waste points are all on site too. Time to get out and see some of the surrounds? You’ll want to start in Wells, best accessed via a half-hour wander or by flagging down a bus from the stop just by the site. Beyond that, fine days out nearby include Wookey Hole, Cheddar Gorge or tramping country trails in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Local attractions

Rather more than just a handy place for your supermarket shopping (although it is well endowed on that front…), the wee city of Wells is a fine place for a wander. Start by scrutinising the 300 statues on the west front of the cathedral, before taking a stroll down Vicars Close (believed to be the only complete medieval street in England) and meandering along the moat at the Bishop’s Palace. Try to time your trip for a Wednesday or Saturday if you can, as those are the days the market comes to town. Those whose hols have to include a hike or few should be chuffed to find they’ve picked a site right on the edge of the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, an area with plenty of paths and quiet roads to walk or bike along. Top picks nearby include Ebbor Gorge (35 minutes’ walk), Blagdon Lake (half an hour’s drive) and craggy Crook Peak (25 minutes). Further leg-stretching options might include outings to the stunning caves at Wookey Hole (five minutes' drive), walks in Cheddar Gorge (20 minutes) or clambering up Glastonbury Tor (20 minutes)… all followed by a pint or two in one of Wells's pub perhaps?
