  • Off-grid site with a shepherd’s hut in a secluded Exmoor valley
  • A 15-minute drive from Dunster beach and South West Coast Path
  • Eco-friendly unit with woodburning stove, firepit and kitchen
Fancy having the freedom to roam in the woods and fields of a peaceful area with barely another soul in sight? Then throw yourself into a break at Thron Farm – this park is in a secluded Somerset valley on Exmoor that isn’t accessible by car. Mountain bikes could easily be ridden down to the shepherd’s hut and it’s reachable in five minutes on foot too (but as it's quite steep it may take a little longer to get back up…). Staff will transport you there with your bags from the main house and will collect you on the day you leave as well. Now on to that hut: the accommodation is clean, comfortably furnished and has a small kitchen area, plus there’s a woodburning stove for heating or cooking, a firepit for whipping up food alfresco (extra fuel can be collected from the woods) and a gas ring for those who don't want to bother with building a blaze. If you’re up for an off-grid getaway, this space three miles from Dunster really is top-notch. There’s no electricity, so light is provided by oil lamps, gas or candles, and spring water is available at a nearby standpipe. There are also composting toilet facilities and an outdoor shower with hot water. The hut is stocked with the basics for making tea and coffee, and it's possible to buy eggs and milk too. Just make sure to bring wellies or boots, a head torch and a rucksack along with you and keep in mind that there’s no phone signal at the hut, but limited reception is available if you walk back up to the house. The stroll to and from the accommodation requires a basic level of fitness.

Local attractions

An off-grid stay doesn’t mean you’ll have no access to entertainment. The nearest pub is two miles along a rough footpath (possible by mountain bike if you have commando-like tendencies). There's another pub in the opposite direction, along the same footpath about three miles away, and if you walk or ride your bike there then staff can bring you back if asked in advance. Being rural, the surrounds are excellent for walkers, mountain bikers and birdwatchers, plus outdoor activities like canoeing, fishing and pony trekking are available. Craving the beach? It’s a 15-minute drive to the sands of Dunster and the stellar South West Coast Path. If you'd like to include the odd attraction among your countryside explores, aim for Minehead (15 minutes' drive) to board a heritage train on the West Somerset Railway, soak up some history at Cleeve Abbey (20 minutes) or admire the floral displays at Greencombe Gardens (25 minutes).
