  • Peaceful Somerset farm site half an hour from Bristol and Bath
  • Plenty of space, with no restrictions on pitch size
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed
Feel rural and regal in the village of Regil at quiet, well-maintained and very green Walnut Tree Farm, a small Somerset farm site roughly half an hour's drive from the fab cities of Bristol and Bath. There's a right royal amount of space here, and you can lay claim to as much of it as you wish, as there are no restrictions on pitch size here. Select your spot (by the stream, perhaps, or looking out over the neighbouring fields) and make yourselves at home with whatever outdoor furniture, paddling pools and barbecue kit you need for a comfy stay. Feel free to create a campfire corner too – there's firewood available to buy by the barrowload to help you build up a good blaze. Close to the pitches is a collection of excellent eco-friendly facilities, including clean compost toilets and hot showers. Quiet time (10pm-8am) by night is requested across the site to ensure all guests can benefit from a good dose of rural peace to aid their dozing.

Liked: Lovely scenic little setup with nice toilets and showers to cover your needs. Lots of space.

Disliked: Signal was rubbish but not the fault of the camp just an FYI for anyone relying on it. I was on O2. If you want to disconnect from the tech world is a positive 😁

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Loads of space between pitches, the ‘table and chair’ on the pitch. Clean toilets and showers and loads of hot water in the shower. Friendly owners. Recycling on site. Walks straight from the site.

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Beautiful campsite that was peaceful, relaxed and had loads of space. Owner was super friendly and even offered us a tractor ride to feed the cows! Facilities were clean and well kept.

Disliked: Only downsides were the noise from the airport and the lack of hot water for washing up.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Lovely quiet site with plenty of space. Compost loos are spotless and spacious with solar heated warm water for washing. Solar heated water in showers too. The owner was very attentive and eager to ensure you have a good stay. He even took families for a ride round the farm in his tractor trailer.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Very friendly host who went out of his way to make sure we were happy with everything. Even offered tractor rides for the children! Clean and tidy toilets and showers. Lovely location and remote. My little boy loved the compost toilets! A novelty flushing the loo with sawdust!!

Disliked: Nothing! Though might not be easy to get to if you have a larger vehicle due to narrow lanes.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Clean, spacious and picturesque site with excellent composting toilets, solar showers, recycling area and surrounded by countryside. The owner was superb, friendly, welcoming and proactive. Offering families with children rides on his tractor trailer, free eggs for campers and wheelbarrows full of wood for only £10

Disliked: Extra £10 per vehicle for booking. Either include it in price or get rid of extra charge as it doesn't make sense. E. G. If you book a campervan pitch it's £20 per night for 2 people plus £10 per stay per vehicle, whether it 1 night or 5 nights.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Site is well maintained. Purpose built toilets and showers are really clean. Farmer Micheal is brilliant! Took our kids on a tractor ride to feed his cows, they loved it! Collected fresh eggs from the chickens. Beautiful location.

Disliked: You can hear the planes from Bristol airport but it's not loud enough to keep you awake!

Local attractions

Looking over the Mendip Hills, it would seem that these limestone beauties would be an apt place to start your explorations from Walnut Tree Farm… it’s easy to see why this is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As well as prehistoric Cheddar Gorge, half an hour’s drive from the site, there’s a Victorian fort at Brean Down (about an hour’s drive west), and an Iron Age hill fort (about 40 minutes south) at Brent Knoll, to hook every kind of history buff. While you’re doing the historical rounds, go Gothic at the National Trust’s Tyntesfield, a turreted and stone-carved mansion 10 miles north of Walnut Tree Farm. You'll be able to smell a good tale here – the house was once owned by one of the country’s wealthiest commoners, who managed to get himself rather stinking rich thanks to fertiliser. (It’ll all make scents if you pay a visit and nose out more.) Step onto the Monarch’s Way footpath to follow the escape route from the Battle of Worcester said to have been taken by the future Charles II back in 1651; running from Worcester to Bristol and down to Brighton, the path is clearly marked so ensures a royally safe experience (perhaps unlike that of Charles II). From the Monarch’s Way south of Bristol, you’ll wind up in Wells (15 miles from Walnut Tree Farm), where a cracking cathedral awaits, along with the 800-year-old Bishop’s Palace and its medieval features including a drawbridge and well-kept gardens for exploring.
