  • Peaceful park in the Connemara countryside, 1.6km from Cong
  • On the only public road to Lough Corrib, a kilometre's stroll away
  • Mini cinema, barbecue area, playground, kitchen and guest lounge
Did you know that John Wayne film The Quiet Man was filmed in the small Irish village of Cong, in the Connemara countryside? If you didn't, you do now – and if you've never seen the film, you will here, as it's shown every night in town in the mini cinema belonging to Cong Camping Caravan and Glamping Park. Cong is fairly famed in other ways for such a small village: it's the setting of Cong Abbey, where Ireland's last High King spent his final years, and of Ashford Castle, the medieval fortification updated in Victorian times by the Guinness family and used along with the village in that film of John Wayne. (And Oscar Wilde spent his childhood in Cong too.) If you now want to stay in Cong with some immediacy, make for Cong Camping Caravan and Glamping Park in the Joyce Country & Western Lakes Geopark a kilometre and a half from the village. Set on the borders of counties Mayo and Galway and between Lough Mask and Lough Corrib, it's the nearest camping and caravan park to Ashford Castle and is on the only public road to Lough Corrib (the lough is a kilometre away). Get ready for strolls and hikes too: around 2,000 acres of woodland surrounds the village for forest walks and walks along the lake shore and riverbanks. Site facilities include a kitchen and a barbecue area available for guests, a sitting room, that mini cinema, a playground and a freezer in which to stash any catches landed at the surrounding rivers. Local information and maps are available on site as well as discount vouchers for local cafés and restaurants; there's also a campers' kitchen and a laundry facility.

Electric optional grass touring caravan pitch

Liked: Good level pitches handy water supply, good central position to explore the area.

Disliked: Just thought it a bit expensive at 30 Euros a night but that is the way it's going all around when you take in the extra fuel and the cost of the pitch you can almost get a B&B for the same amount.

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Can’t say I liked anything. Other than it was close to the beautiful CONG town

Disliked: Signs everywhere TELLING you what not to do. After sending no welcome other than the rules of the camp they weee also plastered on the reception building. No one was supposed to use the laundry unless between 3-7pm. I have an illness that robs me of energy as the day wears on so i needed to use that facility that is paid for in our tariff. I kindly mentioned this and eventually got my laundry done at a reasonable time. With the words “ im too tired to argue with you” It just felt like a military base and unless you had the correct equipment there was no tv. The WiFi was next to useless and the shower facilities left a lot to be desired. Not even a chair apparently to sit and put clothes on in gets shower. I didn’t use the ladies

Electric optional grass tent pitch (large)

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: Tent area sandwiched between grey breeze-block walls of facilities, bins and cap park. No exactly what you come to West of Ireland for. Sites so crammed and close together you may as well be sleeping in someone else's tent. Noisy and no peace whatsoever given cars constantly passing by. I left after one night - still, they take your money, no refund policy. It's the norm - and really needs to change....... all the happy 10 out of 10 reviews writ large and real experiences tucked away. I would not have booked here had the reality been made clear.

Local attractions

Cong, glorious Cong… see the sights of this pretty village before getting into the Connemara countryside around Cong Camping Caravan and Glamping Park. As well as Ashford Castle and Cong Abbey, you can also mosey around also find the Quiet Man Cottage Museum (of course) with replica sets from the film; guided tours of the film locations are available daily. Fishing is available nearby (also of course): the area surrounding Cong is an anglers' haven with waterways between Loughs Mask and Corrib. You could also set off on days of cruises, horse riding and pony trekking, falconry, bike hire and golf. Ghost tours are to hand too if you feel up for it: ask the Cong Caravan team or in the village for details. Caves, castles, stone circles and cairns are within easy driving distance and both Galway and Westport are close for urban days out. Travelling further afield, Cong is 55 minutes' drive from the Wild Atlantic Way signature discovery point at Killary Harbour.
