The beach and coast around this park will reel you in: family-run Duncannon Holiday Park in Ireland's south east is on the Wexford coast in the backdrop of heavenly Hook Head which has the oldest working lighthouse on the planet. Duncannon is minutes away from the village of Hook, which buzzes in summer with festivals, scuba diving and windsurfing; guests can ask the site team to help arrange outdoor activities for them as well as Pilates and yoga. The park has well-maintained modern facilities including showers and loos, free wifi, a games room with pool tables and arcade games, a playground and evening entertainment. Reception is open until 10pm in the summer months and has a small shop with ice-cream and sweets. For supplies and eats, Duncannon village has a newsagent, two takeaways, a café, three pubs and three award-winning restaurants. A supermarket, ATM and another pub is at nearby Ramsgrange.

Local attractions

The tagline for the Hook Peninsula is that you could find a beach a day for a fortnight, whether you want foamy surfing waves, calm swimming waters, deep sea angling, birdwatching or sheltered coves to hide away in. The nearest beach, Duncannon, is a sandy stretch a mile long and has car parking on the water's edge. Sixteenth century Duncannon Fort is one of the most visited attractions in the area and has an arts gallery, maritime museum and several arts and craft shops. Also highly popular is Hook Lighthouse, now a visitor centre with gift shop, guided tours, a café, art exhibitions and maritime displays. If you've never kitesurfed before, lessons and kit hire are available locally at Hooked Kitesurfing. Other adrenalised options are at Shielbaggan Outdoor Adventure Centre which has orienteering, sea kayaking, coasteering, high ropes, surfing, archery, rock climbing and more. Also in the area, play crazy golf near Fethard-on-Sea at Abbey Par 3, or shiver among the spooks and laser tag of 'the most haunted house in Ireland' Loftus Hall.
