  • Community-owned and family-friendly holiday park
  • Within easy reach of Montrose, Stonehaven and a well-stocked shop
  • Bowling, 18-hole putting course, tennis and playground
Where would you like to stay while up Angus way? At the fab family-friendly site of Wairds Park, that's where: this is a Scottish stunner. Community owned and run, friendly, acclaimed and spotless Wairds is by the beach in the fishing village of Johnshaven, 15 minutes' drive from Montrose and Stonehaven, and with stacks to do on site among cracking coastal views. Around the region, Dunnotar Castle, Crawton and other highlights of the North East Coastal Trail are all close to hand. For days on site (much recommended: have you seen those views?), Wairds has tennis, bowling and an 18-hole putting course all available for an extra charge, and a playground to entertain the kids while grownups have a more sedate time soaking up the views. Free wifi is available at reception. Pitches are well spaced out and on grass, within easy reach of the park's showers, toilets, disabled toilet and laundry room. There's a food prep area for guests' use too, and a convenience store (acclaimed as excellent by the Wairds team) open seven days a week in the local village. Elsewhere for eats and drinks, two hotels are within simple strolling distance: the Ship, with a traditional lounge bar, and the Anchor, serving fresh homemade meals specialising in local seafood and seasonal dishes.

Local attractions

Johnshaven is a small and scenic traditional Angus fishing village, with a marina, harbour and pebbly beach, five minutes' drive from the sandy beach of St Cyrus. It's 20 minutes' drive from here to Montrose to the south and Stonehaven to the north. The village is also close to the North East Coastal Trail, the scenic stretch of Scottish coastline from St Cyrus to Forres just over 100 miles away. Its first section runs from St Cyrus to Stonehaven and further along the coast to Aberdeen, 30 miles or about 45 minutes' drive from Wairds Park; on arrival, have a day in the city or make an Aberdeen pitstop before driving the 40 miles or so to Fraserburgh via Peterhead. Some top heritage sightseeing is along the coastal trail too: within 20 minutes' drive of Waird Park are spectacular Dunnotar Castle, the ruined medieval fortress on a headland surrounded by cliffs; 14th-century Fetteresso Castle, rebuilt as a manor house in the 18th century, and Crawton, the abandoned fishing village where ruins of houses and the village school still remain. Driving in the other direction, it's 40 minutes from Wairds to Angus's biggest town Arbroath, home to  Kerr's Miniature Railway (the oldest in Scotland), Arbroath Abbey, the summer Seafest, and the swish Harbour Visitor Centre by the town quay.
