  • Wooden glamping with sauna on a Scottish island
  • Quiet rural retreat: see the Northern Lights from here
  • A 10-mile drive from the harbour at Tobermory
Wooden glamping – with sauna – on a Scottish island? How spectacular. Eco Camping Cabin is in the small village of Salen on the island of Mull, 10 miles from Tobermory. It has accommodation built using traditional techniques and recycled materials where possible... and is also home to a sauna cabin for blissful dips in splendid setting: you might even see the Northern Lights blazing overhead. The units have no running water or electricity, but water can be obtained outside and there's an eco-friendly earth-composting toilet for guests' use. For supplies and wandering, Salen village has local amenities and is a good base from which to explore the scenery of Mull, and see the wildlife on land and at sea. There's top cycling and walking all over the island, with plenty of quiet beaches and historic attractions to pass.

Local attractions

No need to go very far to arrange days out from around here: pony trekking is available from the Killiechronan Estate a few miles away, and you only have to wander for about 10 minutes to reach the ruins on Aros Castle, scenically set overlooking the Sound of Mull. This last is a splendid spot for a picnic: bag your supplies at the shops and the coffee shop in Salen. After both pony trekking and picnic, plus many walks around the coast, take to the car for 20 minutes to get to the island's capital Tobermory, famed for its colourful harbour (which is mighty pretty indeed). Arrange whale and dolphin spotting boat trips from town, or potter around its streets for the Mull Museum, the Tobermory whisky distillery and Mull Aquarium. Mull is a top spot for wildlife watching and nature spotting, with thousands of plant species recorded as well as over 260 types of bird and a cute collection of otters living around the coast. Sharks and porpoises as well as whales and dolphins can be seen in the waters around Mull, so do be sure to bag that marine mammal spotting trip back in Tobermory.
