  • Small secluded site on the south end of the Isle of Arran
  • Close to the beach and a local restaurant
  • Spot golden eagles, red squirrels, red deers, seals and otter
Runach Arainn means 'Secret Arran' in Gaelic, and this small secluded site at the southern end of the Isle of Arran is aptly named... this is a most peaceful, private and rural place, with yurts on site to be used as loved-up getaways or bases for active family hols: beaches are an easy 15 minutes away and towering Goat Fell mountain is there to be tackled on the island's north. This is a wildlife haven too – species to spot include the Scottish big five (golden eagle, red squirrel, red deer, seal and otter) and is in spectacularly scenic locale, with island views ranging from high in the Goat Fell range to Torrylinn Beach down in the south. You'll also find heaps of Arran heritage like the Neolithic standing stones at Machrie Moor and Brodick Castle, and family days like the Arran Family Fun Park at Balmichael or cruises on the Waverley, the last ocean-going paddle steamer in the world and a visitor to Arran every week during summer. (And as the island is only 20 miles by 10, you'll be nicely close to pretty much everything else too.) The yurts at Runach Arainn were handmade by a Scottish company and have larch wood frames, are fully insulated and have woodburning stoves/cookers for toastiness (and toast?) in all weathers. Each has a private bathroom and access to a shared laundry/utility room with a fridge, microwave, kettle and washing machine. A restaurant is at the Lagg Hotel ten minutes' walk away.

To reach Runach Arainn when you come off the ferry you need to head south round the main road towards Lamlash and Whiting Bay. Follow the road round the island for about 19 miles (through both Lamlash and Whiting Bay). When you enter Kilmory you will pass the Creamery on your left and take the next right (signposted for Kilmory Church) - just by the bus shelter. Local attractions

The miles of golden sand and views of Ailsa Cragg are 15 minutes' walk from Runach Arainn at Torrylinn Beach; going north, drive or cycle to Blackwaterfoot in the west and Lochranza in the north. By car, around 15 minutes will have you at the shops, restaurants and golf course of Blackwaterfoot. Lamlash,25 minutes from your yurt, has shops, cafés, another golf course and ferries to Holy Isle. The Machrie Moor standing stones and the King's Cave circuit (a three-mile circular walk through forests and along beach, including the Kings Caves) are 20 minutes' drive away. The main settlement on Arran, the town of Brodick, is 35 minutes away: head here for Brodick Castle and its gardens, yet another golf course (seven are on the island overall), Arran Aromatics, the Arran Brewery, the Auchrannie spa resort and the ferry route to Ardrossan and from there the national trains on the mainland. The Arran Distillery is in Lochranza a 45-minute drive away. To get very active in the area, take on the 60-mile mountain biking route around the island's coast road, arrange some gorge walking, kayaking or sailing or hike around the Giants' Graves near Whiting Bay.
