  • Friendly park alongside the Ayr river
  • A short stroll from Muirkirk and the 42-mile River Ayr Way
  • Licensed bar and club open on weekends
Riverside pitching up in Ayrshire? Bring the kids, bring the dogs (only if you have them, no need to borrow them specially for the occasion…) and have a stay at Muirkirk Caravan Site, an all-weather park set in a scenic spot alongside the River Ayr and a short stroll from the comely village of Muirkirk. Splendid Scottish scenery is all around for folks who pitch up here, with easy access to ways to take it in from hiking trails, a golf course or a suitable fishing spot by the river. Those seeking something more of an adrenaline rush can get their speed on at the motor racing circuit a mere couple of minutes' stroll away. This is a friendly and relaxed site, with plenty of comfy showers and toilets (including disabled facilities) along with other handy facilities including chemical disposal and a washing-up area. A range of bevvies (at pleasingly bargainous prices) is on offer in the park's licensed clubhouse, which opens on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. Live bands and other family-friendly entertainment is frequently laid on here too, so come set for a sociable boogie and singalong. If you've got kids that need to let off steam, there's a big playground a few minutes' amble away in the local village; a convenience store, pubs and a chippy are also on hand for stocking up on eats.

Local attractions

Fill your boots by hiking one of the many interesting walks nearby: the 42 or so miles of River Ayr Way follows the banks of the waterway which passes the park; for a shorter ramble, Twa Brigs takes in two historic crossing points, a Bronze Age hut and a fab picnic spot; or for a challenge, scale all 1,944 feet of Cairntable. Golfers can tee off at the nine-hole Muirkirk Golf Club (five minutes' drive); anglers can chance their arm fishing some brown trout out of Glenbuck Loch (10 minutes), or on the upper stretches of the River Ayr (permits available locally). Horseback treks, carriage rides and kids' farm days are 15 minutes away with the gentle giants of Blackstone Clydesdales. Meanwhile, petrolheads may be able to take in a rally stage or some motor tests at the Kames motorsport circuit, a few minutes' walk away. If you fancy swapping country for coast, Muirkirk is only 45 minutes' drive from the beaches at Ayr and Troon. If it's city lights and cultural attractions you crave, try day trips to Glasgow and Edinburgh, 40 and 50 miles away.
