  • Family-run site just off the M74, for handy stopovers or longer breaks
  • Within 15 minutes' drive of Gretna Green, Annan and Lockerbie
  • Almost four acres of grounds with gardens, play area and lawn areas
Stop off on journeys south – or further north – at Kirkconnel Hall Hotel, a family-run business in a 15th-century Dumfries and Galloway house with gorgeous grounds stretching out to almost four acres and made up of gardens, lawn areas, a play area and mature trees and shrubs. This south-west Scotland site (and its mass of greenery) is easily spotted from Junction 19 of the M74 on the edge of the country village of Ecclefechan. With access being so simple, it’s a popular place for short breaks and stopovers on longer journeys but is also ace for a longer hol exploring the Solway Firth surrounds. Coming from the south, Kirkconnel is half an hour from the city of Carlisle and, once in Scotland, Dumfries is 30 minutes west of the hotel; use the place as a base for checking out sights like the Famous Blacksmiths Shop of Gretna Green (where clandestine nuptials used to take place) 15 minutes' drive away. Got your own wedding to plan? This site hosts all sorts of events, from parties to business conferences, in a fancy building where Napoleon’s physician used to reside back in the 18th century (bet you didn't expect that one…). If you’re not putting on a party, sip beers at the bar, laze in the lounge or dine in the restaurant; alternatively, get food over in Lockerbie, 10 minutes’ drive away, the closest big town for restaurants and supplies. Other facilities on site include a wifi, a toilet block and a TV room. Pick-up from public transport’s available too – just get in touch on the booking form in advance.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Everything, John came out to greet us on arrival (last minute booking). He showed us everywhere we could pitch up, told us the open and close times for the toilets. Extremely friendly people couldn't offer more of they tried. I met Angie and Babs. Everyone was so welcoming. Thank you all so much for a lovely stay! We will definitely be back.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely man working at the hotel, late check in available and a nice location.

Disliked: Didn’t seem super organised and toilets shut at 11pm which was a little annoying but overall a great stay.

If nothing more, it makes a great stop-off when driving further north.

2 bedroom static caravan

Liked: I have to say that the best thing is the location, in respect to the M6 motorway junction. A perfect stop-off when traveling from London to the Highlands: 370 miles on the motorway, and 1/4 mile local roads. After our days out, it was equally nice to get back to base so easily. The grounds are nice for strolling through, and there is a museum feel to the place - with bits and pieces from days gone by dotted around. Great conversation material for inquisitive youngsters. The proprietors are a lovely couple; very welcoming and helpful - even loaned me a pump to top up my tyres. There was another gentleman there who told me lots of local stories, and showed me where I could find Napoleon's tree. We didn't stay inside the hotel, but I believe there was even more atmosphere there; something to discover around every corner; pictures and statues - and probably a ghost too (or is that just my wishful thinking?) Despite the nearness to the motorway, the grounds were quiet, and the traffic noise was not an issue. It would have been even nicer if there was somewhere to sit and eat; either inside the caravan, or outside; somewhere to enjoy our Haggis, Neeps and Tatties. There was wifi, but the reception in the caravan seemed to depend on the receiving device and atmospherics. We could pick up wifi on a laptop, but not an iPad. Just a few feet towards the hotel, the iPad could get a signal. Having said that though, I have never had good wifi on a campsite. Oh, and not a midge to be seen.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Easy to get to if traveling up the motorway and just need a place to pitch your tent for the night

Disliked: There are no showers and the only washing facilities are within the toilet block and are just a few sinks (plenty of hot water so that was OK) Tolet block is locked up at 10:30pm As the site is situated very close to the motorway it is therefore also very noisy 24 hours of the day! There is also a rail line adjacent to the other side of the camp site which is also very noisy when the frequent trains go past

Local attractions

Seeing as you're staying in Scotland, you might want to wander around a whisky distillery while on your trip – and you should do so in Annan (15 minutes' drive), where you can have a little look round a museum documenting the town's past while you’re in the area. For more history in this region that’s rich with it, travel to Carlyle's Birthplace (five minutes) to peer at the childhood home of the writer, or hike up to Repentance Tower at Hoddom Castle (10 minutes) – a nine-hole golf course is here as well, if you just so happen to have the clubs in the boot… The ruins of another castle are in Lochmaben (15 minutes) and there’s yet another old building – the 16th-century Gilnockie Tower house – in Langholm (half an hour) if you’ve still more appetite for admiring age-old architecture.
