Starry, starry night...the views from this park above the wide sands of Luce Bay are just as awesome after dark as they are by day: this area has been named the country’s first ever Dark Sky Park, thanks to its stellar celestial displays. The pitches at Whitecairn Holiday Park are on level ground and all have electric hook-ups. There’s free trout fishing on site, a playground for the kids and access to an indoor swimming pool at nearby Glenluce Holiday Park, plus the usual shower, loo and laundry facilities.

Local attractions

The park is only a mile from the village of Glenluce, where there are various shops, a motor museum and the remains of a Cistercian abbey dating back to 1190. Visitors to Whitecairn are well placed to sample some of Scotland’s most famous exports, from the golden nectar that flows from the Bladnoch whisky distillery, to the salmon, trout and kippers at Galloway Smokehouse. Sweet-toothed sybarites should seek out the Cocoabean factory, a chocoholic’s dream. There are unexpectedly exotic treats for green-fingered guests to unearth too, such as the Logan Botanic Gardens, whose rare blooms are nurtured by Galloway’s mild Gulf Stream climate. Bookish types will enjoy nearby Wigtown, christened “Scotland’s book town” because of its plethora of bookshops and excellent autumn literature festival. For those looking for sport, the area boasts several good golf courses with wonderful views; hikers and bikers will enjoy the trails in the Galloway Forest; and the local beaches offer a range of watersports. Thrill-seeking guests can try out blo-karting and mountain balling, just a couple of the many adventure activities on offer at the local outdoor centre. You could even take a ferry trip to Ireland from nearby Stranraer...
