  • Sea-view touring site on the banks of Loch Ryan
  • A 10-minute drive from Stranraer and Cairnryan ferry port
  • Play park and laundry on site; dogs welcome
Gallivant to the Gaelic shores around Ryan Bay Caravan Park for a dose of brisk Scottish air so plentiful that you and your wee ones (and your dog, if you've brought one) will most likely be zonked out night after night… Pitches here are well placed for taking in the bonny backdrop of Loch Ryan, for scenic saunters along Scotland's west coast and for jaunts to the pretty villages of Portpatrick, Glenluce and Kirkcudbright. A 10-minute drive will take you down to Stranraer for restaurants, shops and other urban amenities, or up to Cairnryan to board a ferry bound for the shores of Northern Ireland, a mere 20 miles away. Day looking a little 'dreich'? (What a splendid word for summing up damp, grey climes.) Use it as an excuse (as if you needed one) to take a whisky tour – or stick about on site to admire the sea views. Other facilities on site include an outdoor play area to aid with that plan to tire out the tiddlers. Guests at the park also have access to free heated showers, a covered dishwashing area and Elsan and waste disposal points. There's also a laundry on site for guests’ use and the park is kept safe and secure with CCTV coverage.

Liked: Superschöne Lage direkt am Loch Ryan. Sehr sehr freundliches & hilfsbereites Personal. Sanitäre Anlagen bereits etwas in die Jahre gekommen aber zumindest sehr sauber. Spül- & Waschbereich recht neu und gut gepflegt. Wir kommen sehr gerne wieder!

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Views. Level, well kept pitches . Friendly welcome. Stranraer close by. Clean facilities . Lovely .

Disliked: Nowhere in the shower to put clothing, towels etc. Small hooks almost useless. Nowhere to sit if needed when dressing. Light switch not obvious. No women's accessible toilet/shower. We never did find the rubbish bins and other guests couldn't help us.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Ease of finding the site as it was right beside the main road. Washing-up facilities located at the front of the Reception block were very clean and obviously new.

Disliked: Sadly, looking beyond the prim entrance and the numerous well-maintained static caravan homes on site, the toilet/showering amenities for those of us in campervans without such on-board facilities did leave a lot to be desired and, at a basic level, were often unclean, in extremely urgent need of modernisation and expanding beyond the two toilets cubicles and two shower cubicles. The campervan pitches were sandwiched on a narrow, tapering strip of land between the bay-fronting static caravan homes and noisy main road. Although booked to stay two nights because of all the above we decided to cut out stay on-site to a single night and move on elsewhere. Of less importance, although still worth pointing out, was the crumbling state of the concrete hard-standing for the campervans.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Stunning location. Quiet site with relaxed vibe. Really friendly welcome. Excellent facilities.Lovely to see the animals in the "mini- zoo". Wonderful for bird watchers with wading birds etc in bay. Our favourite site of the year.

Disliked: Only minor dislikes. A pot-wash would be nice, as would more hooks in the toilet and showers to stop clothes getting wet. Also the layout of the gents toilets is weird with pedestal crammed against one wall of cubicle, and 3 sinks crammed next to partition so only one can be used at a time.

Local attractions

Castle Kennedy's gardens (10 minutes' drive) are packed with a bountiful array of plants and wildlife to spy – get snug in the bird hides to see what you can see. Kids can dash about beneath the 20 towering and ancient ‘Champion Trees’ and there’s a right royal time to be had exploring the ruins of the sixteenth-century castle. Sea lovers should certainly skedaddle to Scotland’s most southerly point, the Mull of Galloway (45 minutes’ drive). Climb the 26m-high lighthouse and visit the engine room exhibition to have all your questions answered by the experts. The surroundings are a Site of Special Scientific Interest and RSPB reserve, so when you’re not mulling over Mull’s scenery, you may spot the likes of roe deer, brown hare, guillemots and puffins. For foodies, The Cocoabean Company chocolate factory is about an hour’s drive east, with kids’ workshops and play areas alongside a swathe of sweet treats. About 45 minutes away is Galloway Smokehouse (in Wigtown Bay) for top-notch smoked Scottish salmon and trout. If you’re on the way back from the smokehouse, Bladnoch Whiskey Distillery’s shop is enroute and it’d be rude not to pop in for a sample of Scotland’s finest to take home…
