  • Hot tubs in every lodge, farm walks and visits to llamas and deer
Partial to a private hot tub? And how about smashing bucolic views while settling back to bubble? If they’re your top two holiday musts, then a stay Balmeadowside Lodges and Cottages should be most pleasing. These plush and pristine self-catering holiday lodges are set on the south-facing slopes of a working farm, with spectacular views of the surrounding Fife countryside. Several fab walks crisscross the farm, and there’s plenty in the area to attract too: lots of local hills are around for brisk country hikes and ambles, tiptop wildlife watching around Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve, plus beaches to explore at Leuchars and the East Neuk. For sightseeing and shop-til-you-drop city trips or seaside town days, shopping and sightseeing around splendid St Andrews, Dundee and Perth are all within super handy reach too. Back at your lush and lovely rural retreat, lavishly decorated living spaces, mega comfy beds, top-notch kitchen and bathroom conveniences and a roomy hot tub are what come with each and every lodge, and a separate laundry building is on hand for resorting holiday clobber to a spick and span state. Guests are more than welcome to explore the working farm aspect of Balmeadowside and take a peek at the farm’s resident sheep, cattle, red deer and llamas – a special treat for animal-admiring littlies, if they can be torn away from the site’s cracking playground. Those fond of wilder feathered and furry critters will be right at home around here, for lots of local wildlife live in and around Balmeadowside and its locale, with roe deer, rabbits, pheasants and owls oft spotted around the grounds, and regular visits from ducks, swans and herons to the farm’s ponds. Cupar, around 15 minutes’ drive away, is a lovely little town with a beaut bakers for must-try breads and buns, and several restaurants are around too should one wish to have time off cooking duty (you are on your hols, after all).

Local attractions

Stays of all sorts are sorted around the locale: lots of local hills are around for brisk hiking days, and the area is crisscrossed too by several pretty pre-Reformation pilgrim walks between abbeys, priories and holy wells, and some are along the River Eden and its tributaries between the area's eight historic mills. Leisurely strolls of varying lengths stretch between various points around the locale such as those between Riverside East and Old Curling Pond, Hawklaw and Kingask and Cupar to Moonzie Kirk via Hilton, all of which make for smashingly scenic countryside ambles. For those particularly keen on touring Fife’s spectacular coastline on foot, the Fife Coastal Path is an absolute must. Speaking of which, sandside days around the seashore are within 25 minutes’ drive at the village of Leuchars – known for its annual RAF Leuchars Air Show – or 45 along Fife’s fab East Neuk area. For sightseeing and city shopping trips, Dundee and Perth are 40 minutes away by car. For those with littlies, the splendid Scotch seaside town of St Andrews is a short drive away: here they’ll be muchly amused by a trip to the aquarium, where they can gawp at watery critters like sharks, piranhas and seahorses, take a look at the twice-daily seal feeding and get involved in nice little nature safaris around its rockpools. Elsewhere, wildlife watchers would be well advised to head over to the cracking coastal spot of Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve; covering 50 square miles, the reserve’s forest is set among what was once sand dunes and moorland and visited by all sorts of coastal creatures, with many a migratory bird to be found around Morton Loch and the forest’s hidden mudflats.
