  • Spectacularly scenic site on the shores of the Hebridean Isle of Lewis
  • A 25-minute drive from Stornoway and 20 minutes from sandy beaches
  • Five minutes’ walk from café and gift shop at Callanish Visitor Centre
In the market for an oh-so-scenic getaway out in the wilds? Callanish Camping could well fit the bill… The site hugs the shores of the Isle of Lewis – the northernmost of Scotland’s Outer Hebrides – less than five minutes’ drive from the tiny village of Callanish. Lewis is chock-full of neolithic sites and one of the most famous of these, Callanish Stones, is within almost absurdly easy reach. A five-minute stroll from base will bring guests to the Callanish Visitor Centre where, after exploring the exhibition detailing the stones’ history, an easy saunter will lead to the stone circle that's stood on this spot for nearly 5,000 years. The Visitor Centre is also a good spot for local eats in the café (although microwaves and electric kettles are provided on site for folk who prefer to whip up their own snacks, and the use of barbecues is allowed). There’s a gift shop here too, so make a beeline when it’s time to pick up some souvenirs.

Sgadan camping pod

Liked: We travelled with our dog and found the cabin to be the perfect cosy hideaway for a few days in the middle of a storm. It was bliss to lie on our camp beds listening to the rain and wind lash the cabin while we were all snug inside. In fact, I couldn't believe how warm and well insulted the cabin was during a cold, autumn stay. The facilities are basic but very well thought through with a kettle, microwave and cool box in the cabin for all the essentials and a lovely hot shower, toilet and small kitchen in the shared cabin a little walk away. The scenery from the cabin door was lovely and wild. We really felt remote and valued the privacy. Before and during our stay, the owner communicated very clearly and was always friendly. We were extremely fortunate to see an otter and a seal from our cabin - a real highlight for us. The outer areas were fenced in meaning we could be relaxed about our dog's safety and he loved sniffing around and watching the world go by. A fabulous, affordable stay.

Disliked: The shower is coin operated - £1 or 20p pieces. This is fine as this is clearly written in the booking details, however there is nowhere to get change on site so come prepared. As some others have mentioned in reviews, there is a bit of a walk from the communal areas to the cabin so you have to plan ahead and remember your toiletries, towels, keys and suitable footwear etc when travelling to and fro. Not a problem as, again, this is clearly explained in the site description but just make sure you pack and plan appropriately. This is probably easier in the summer but was quite bracing on a blustery day. There are motion activated lights across the paths but not around the communal areas so a head torch is necessary at night.

Liked: The hostess Cathy was lovely. The view from the pods absolutely stunning.

Disliked: Just felt the pod could do with a little TLC. Decking outside in need of attention. Very uneven and a hole covered with a mat.

Bradan camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Small and peaceful site overlooking the water. Good size for 2 people with comfortable camp beds, mat and small head cushions. Multiple outdoor seats with a small table attached to the side. These can also be used inside. Good size space to sit outside with lighting present. 5 mins walk from the Callanish Visitors Centre which has a cafe providing food and drink. Also bus stop just outside. Great help via email from host Kathy.

Disliked: Shower and toilet too far away from pods but a resolution is underway I believe. Make sure you have change to use the shower. Path to pods a bit uncomfortable underfoot and a big step up to the pods which might prove difficult for some people with mobility issues.

Local attractions

The Isle of Lewis is a particularly pretty spot for explores, with lochs, moorlands and distant mountains to feast eyes upon. Start with trips to the sandy beaches of Dalmore and Dalbeg, both 20 minutes’ drive from the site, to take in the views and hopefully catch some waves – the surfing on Lewis is renowned. Further afield, the stunning Mangersta beach (45 minutes) is certainly worth a visit for its sands and its sea stacks, and the white sands of Eoropie beach on the Butt of Lewis, the islands’ most northerly point, are a must for scenic strolls. Returning to the dry, getting a feel for the island’s history should be a part of any itinerary on Lewis, so make a trip to Gearrannan Blackhouse Village (20 minutes) to experience the lives of old crofting families, getting an insider look at everything from weaving to traditional homemade fare in the café. Call in to the Blackhouse in Arnol (30 minutes) too – it’s set up exactly as it was in the 1960s, so smell the peat smoke, peek inside the box-beds and begin to understand the history. For more modern days, head along to Stornoway, the capital of Lewis. The port town is the departure point for ferries to the mainland, but also has museums, castle grounds and a loom centre to explore, as well as a handful of shops and restaurants.
