  • In a Highland forest with spectacular mountain views
  • Close to the Great Glen Way and near Loch Ness
  • Modern facilities including shower rooms and small shop
Might you know what 'coille' means in Scottish Gaelic? It means forest – which, as you'll see, is a mighty fitting name for the Highlands site of Inver Coille, tucked into in its own surrounding woodland with spectacular mountain views from most areas of the site. This is definite hiking (and Nessie spotting) territory: have a short evening stroll to the local viewpoints or pleasant hike along the Way to the nearby villages of Invermoriston (two miles) or Fort Augustus (four miles), all while keeping a beady eye out for the famed Loch Ness Monster... To keep things peaceful and safe on site, the owners ask that cars remain in the parking area once guests have offloaded their gear; just ask if you need a hand and the team will be happy to help, or you can grab a wheelbarrow to shift all your kit. Either way, call into the reception area on arrival, to pick up tourist info on the area or ask the knowledgeable owners for their top tips on what to see and do. You can charge your phones and other electrical gadgets in reception too, in exchange for a few coins into the site's charity tins. Also on site is a shared amenities block with a washing-up area, drinking water supply and shower rooms. Water is filtered from the burn which runs alongside the site (through UV and coil filtration, and tested by the Highland Council environment department). As befits such a wildly handsome Highlands setting, campfires are allowed here, so pick up your logs and firelighting kits as well as grocery items from the ‘Highlands' smallest shop’. Local shops, post offices and pubs are a few miles away. Dogs are most welcome; the owners have three dogs of their own.

Geodesic dome

Liked: The location is amazing. Long walks lead straight out the back of the campsite, with epic views as a reward. The natural beauty and wildlife is outstanding- we saw golden eagles flying above the loch and picked mushrooms for breakfast. The site facilities are great, everywhere is very clean and well maintained. The geodome was super comfy and cosy, it was warm at night and the log burner works great. It was also quite quiet because it was well insulated. Our private bathroom was fantastic. The shower was very warm. It was very clean. The campsite is quiet and attracted like minded people so the atmosphere was great. We loved every moment thanks 😊.

Disliked: The shower times out very quickly and you have to repeatedly press it to get enough water. I understand this though, given they use a private water supply from the burn. An honesty box would work better so reception could be kept open all the time to access your locker or little shop in reception.

Liked: Loved the timber tent, very cosy and comfortable. Showers, toilets and washing up facility were very clean. The atmosphere of the site is very quiet and peaceful. There is a hike leading from the back of the campsite with great views overlooking Loch Ness which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Bell tent (adults only)

Liked: I rented a bell tent with a full double bed with all the linen and quilt in it. I love the complementary tray with biscuits, tea and coffee. I also had a picnic table with a cover against midges and we also had a log fire bowl which was great for the night. There was lots of other things which made life easier, a gas cooker, a water can, candles, a kettle and cutlery. I will definitely go back and try the globes or the huts. they look amazing too. the owner was really welcoming and friendly. it was good to leave the cars at the entrance. it was also in a great position near the lake Lochness. just a beautiful location!

Camping pod (adults only)

Liked: There is nothing to like about this campsite.

Disliked: We booked the ‘Pod’ at this campsite through www.pitchup.com as a last minute booking as our tent had been damaged by the wind at the previous campsite. Pitchup said that all gas and electric was included in the price and we assumed that the pod had electricity – it doesn’t. Inver Coille’s website states that electric charging is only available at reception in the main description so its easy to overlook that all their accommodation lacks electricity. It also fails to say that there is NO signal for your mobile. On arrival we were asked to provide a £45 deposit for the contents of the Pod – this consisted of a gas camping stove; 2 burners and a grill (the grill was broken; more gas burned above the grill than below it), crockery (chipped) and some cutlery and cooking utensils which did not include a tin opener which is strange as the small shop largely sold tinned goods; and a cool box which was useless as the insulation on the lid was missing. A washing up bowl and pan scourer (used and smelly). Pitchup website asks to keep cars of the grass – this could be taken that you can drive up to the Pod and unload and then park in the allocated car parking area – you can’t. Inver Coille does say that they have wheelbarrows to help you take your camping equipment up to your accommodation – what it fails to say is that you have to wheel the barrow up a hill, this is like trying to push a wheelbarrow up the ramps of a skip to empty it – only instead of having nice smooth planks to push your barrow up you have loose gravel. The pod was tiny – Inver Coille provide measurements for all their other accommodation but NOT for the POD, probably because the Pod is minute. The double bed is positioned lengthways across the width of the pod meaning that you have to climb over your partner if you need to use the loo in the middle of the night. On one side you have a cupboard that houses the camping stove, crockery and utensils and the cool box. On the other side is the gas heater and a folding table and two chairs (although one chair would no longer close/fold). It is impossible to have the table and chairs up inside the pod as the pod is too small. There is a window at the back of the pod but as the pod is position underneath trees the air cannot flow through even with the doors open. As there is no room for chairs inside the pod the only place to sit is on the edge of the bed, this meant when we tried to sleep in the bed you felt like you were falling out of the bed as the edge of the bed is damaged (collapsed) from people sitting on it. It did not make for a comfortable night’s sleep. The pod gets incredibly warm, we had opened the window as soon as we arrived but it didn’t stop the pod from getting uncomfortably warm on an average night. We would have kept the door open whilst trying to sleep but we had a dog so couldn’t but I don’t think it would have made much difference. The pod does have a light (two but only one worked) this is solar powered with a small battery for backup. The toilets and showers were clean – they leave a mop and bucket outside the showers for you to clean after use. We were booked for 5 nights but stayed one night. This campsite is not cheap and for me personally not worth the money; there are much better campsites with better accommodation with bigger pods if you want glamping.

From the manager: So sorry to hear how much you didn’t like our site, yet all our other reviews clearly state differently and also for the pod itself. Also, we are terribly sorry we couldn’t provide you with mobile signal, unfortunately we don’t have any control over where the mobile providers place their masts to give guests reception for their phones, and you could have easily checked the mobile signal on any map from your provider. The £40 was a refundable Good Housekeeping Deposit which was refunded back to you, and the £5 was for your dog to stay with you in the Pod. It’s a shame you found fault with so many things and yet didn’t bring them to our attention at the time whereby we could have done something to rectify the situation, and as we live on-site, I’m sure we could have provided you with a tin opener if one was missing. The Pitchup option for gas and electric is combined, perhaps ticking this to say gas is included for the cooker and heater was our mistake, but the description (written by Pitchup themselves and not by us) clearly states that electric charging is only available in our reception building if you had a read the description on here properly, and which is also means electric is included in the price, unless you’d like to make a donation into one of our charity tins when you use your locker to charge devices, but I get the feeling that was last on your list of positive points about us. The description also clearly states that cars must remain in the car park, and that we provide the wheelbarrows to help you wheel your stuff to the accommodation, we thought this might be easier than leaving guests to carry their luggage and or belongings. The paths are not loose gravel but compacted gravel, but as you didn’t take the path and opted to cut across the field it might well have been harder work. Neither the washing up bowl or scourer were used, as the bowl was cleaned by us, and the scourer replaced with a brand new one – I think our cleaning rating speaks for itself! The photos clearly display what the layout is like inside the Pod, including the bed layout, and what is provided. There is plenty of spare space for a table and chairs, we’ve seen guests use them inside the pod, and if you didn’t wish to use them, they are suitable to be placed on the balcony outside. Or they can be folded and placed to one side. As we clean and make the beds ourselves, I think we would have noticed if the bed or mattress was damaged in any way. I guess some people are never happy! I’m sure if the Pod had been too cold that would have been a problem for you as well, if you opened a window or shut the window – the temperature still wouldn’t have been right! The point is you choose to leave, and in doing so, expected a refund on your stay, because as you weren’t happy and ultimately hadn’t read the description properly it was our fault. The fact is, if you were unsure, you had all our contact details to make the effort to contact us, be it either by phone or by email, to ask, or to double check, even to verify, if you weren’t sure about something, but the fact that you didn’t, is again probably, our fault too!!
