  • Car-free environment on the Isle of Canna in the Hebrides
  • Campfires encouraged: dedicated firepits on site
  • Picnic tables and firepits for guests' use
Can you contemplate coming here… to a remote and peaceful site, on a wild Hebridean island and with scenery so spectacular all you might want to do is sit and stare? You can? You should. Canna Campsite is on the Isle of Canna, an island in the Hebrides where vehicles are firmly declined and where wildlife is all around: expect to see feathered residents like golden eagles and sea eagles circling high up above the crags; puffins, razorbills, guillemots and more puffin' along on Canna's sheer cliffs, and dolphins and smaller whale species ducking about in the waters offshore. All is gorgeously scenic too, including from the site where you can settle down for spectacular views over the coast, along with smashing sunsets, splendid stargazing and just contemplating life, the universe and everything from your island base. Canna Campsite is family run by folk who know how camping works: campfires and outdoor cooking are positively encouraged here, and dedicated firepits and picnic tables are all available for guests' free use. (Don't bother carting logs and charcoal from the mainland; you can buy some on site from the Canna team.) Showers and toilets are available on site – they're free to use but donations are requested for the owners' African women's projects. There's also an independent coffee shop, Canna Café, at the harbour under 10 minutes' walk away for drinks, snacks, evening meals, local seafood and takeaways; the nearby community shop (open from April onwards) is well stocked with a range of groceries, books and local crafts. Both have free wifi.

2 bedroom bunkhouse

Liked: Fantastic views, well equipped kitchen and amazingly chatty resident corncrake. Isebail was great and helped us add an extra night (cos we didn't want to leave!) Kids and husband loved the buoy swings too :) Canna and Sanday are stunning and we were very lucky with weather and wildlife. Puffins, bonxies, porpoises, dolphins, minke whale, sea eagle, seals ... Great for kayaking and walking. And also just sitting and enjoying the incredible scenery and quiet.

Disliked: Not an issue for us, but this isn't for you if you are after luxury and WiFi. Or don't want a wee walk up the hill. 100% part of the appeal for us.

Local attractions

The island may only be 4.3 miles long by a mile wide, but you'll find enough to do around to keep you gloriously occupied for quite some time. Nature first: Canna is home to a wide variety of seabirds and other species, particularly around the north and west cliffs where most of the seabird colonies are spotted. Pick up a Canna Birds checklist at the community shop and sally forth to see what you can see, and keep an eye out for white-tailed sea eagles and golden eagles as they swoop and soar over the ocean. (Please take care not to disturb eagles during nesting season.) Those who dig archaeology are sorted too, as the island has at least 1,200 documented old sites. Its main ones are the Celtic cross, Sgorr nam Ban-Naomha (the nunnery) and the Viking’s Grave, but you'll spot heaps more along any walks you take. For an especially contemplative trip, hike along towards Tarbert (map essential) via the island souterrains to ponder on their original use.
