  • Peaceful shepherd’s hut with a woodfired hot tub and firepit
  • At the foot of Waun Fach, 20 minutes’ drive away from Crickhowell
  • Access to a mountain footpath and bridleway; horses are welcome
At the foot of Waun Fach, the highest mountain in the Black Mountains range, this shepherd’s hut sure is peaceful. What distractions might you experience? Very few other than passing wildlife and but starry skies, as Waun Fach Retreat is in an International Dark Sky Reserve in the Brecon Beacons National Park. When it’s your time to be the visitor, set off to see Waun Fach by heading down the public footpath that runs through the farm to a mountain trail. Splendid views will be your reward… A dunk in the woodfired hot tub might be your second reward upon your return. With complete privacy and a telescope provided for stargazing on clear evenings, retiring to bed might be the last thing on your mind. The only problem is, with Georgian Crickhowell’s Grade I-listed castle and independent high street 20 minutes’ drive away and the Sugar Loaf 35 minutes’ drive away, you might need the precious shut-eye… Some suitable fuel will therefore be paramount too, so it's handy that the shepherd’s hut has cooking facilities such as a gas stove and a firepit. The solar-powered hut has a comfy kingsize bed, a private composting toilet and shower facilities too – the only thing you need to bring is bedding and towels. Exploring in a different way? Horse riders and their horses can be hosted here with prior arrangements. There’s a bridleway on the farm that joins up with the Waun Fach mountain trail. Excellent walks, lakes and mountains are just a short drive away, so all outdoorsy types should be in their element here.

Local attractions

Is hiking your kryptonite? Well, what a handy spot this is, and not just for Waun Fach, which is within walking distance of the shepherd’s hut. The Sugar Loaf (35 minutes’ drive) is another fine option for hikers with its slopes and 18th-century landscaped park. Clydach Gorge (35 minutes) is less challenging in terms of slopes, but a whole day can be spent hiking at this gorgeous place. There are caves, waterfalls and old railways, a real good combo really. Perhaps you’re here to party at the Green Man Festival (25 minutes) site. Or perhaps you’re a foodie who has their sights set on attending the Abergavenny Food Festival in Abergavenny (half an hour). At other times of the year, delicious dishes are easy to track down in the town’s eateries and watersports like canoeing or canal boat rides will get you out over the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.
