We could wax lyrical about all sorts of stuff at Hendwr Caravan Park in Denbighshire (we like waxing lyrical). The location – in the Dee Valley on the edge of Snowdonia National Park. The views – the park is at the foot of the Berwyn Mountains in the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The attention to detail – the friendly owners at Hendwr will order your favourite Sunday paper for you, and you can even pre-book hairdressing appointments to sort out a messy barnet. But, as we’re often told that a picture paints a thousand words (particularly when we are waxing overly lyrical), we’ll just respectfully refer you to the Hendwr Caravan Park main pic, showing the stream flowing gently through the site for paddling and fishing, and point out that the park is accessible via a tranquil tree-lined driveway. That’s scenery, that is. On a working farm between the towns of Corwen and Bala, Hendwr Caravan Park is a family-friendly park that will sort you out for a family holiday, a quick getaway/hideaway or a place to retreat to for the weekend. There are first-class facilities: newly refurbished shower and loo block and washing-up room, on-site shop with info on the many local attractions, launderette, refuse room and wifi. Pitches are a mixture of hardstanding and grass, with a choice of electric hook-up if required. The park is dog-friendly too: something else to wax lyrical about, we reckon…

Local attractions

Pack the camera/paintbox and take to the surrounding countryside for relaxing and capturing pics of more views, or pack the wetsuit/fishing rod/adrenaline for a wealth of outdoor activities at nearby activity centres: whitewater rafting, horse-riding and canoeing are all to hand, with a water centre and high ropes at nearby Bala Lake, the biggest natural body of water in Wales. Feel like getting inside a large ball and zipping your way hamster-like along the countryside or over the water? Bala’s Planet Zorb has harness and hyrdo zorbing on the second longest run in Europe. Mountain bikers can hurtle down the tracks at Coed Llandegla Forest, where there are trails for all abilities as well as bike hire and walking tracks; the forest visitor centre has a bike shop and holds bike repair workshops. If you’re looking for more gentle cycling in the area, there are several road routes to pedal part of. Or you could go the whole hog, dump the idea of travelling under your own steam and have a very gentle sightsee with a trip on the nine-mile round route of the Bala Lake Railway. Still angling for a peaceful time? Hendwr is five minutes’ walk from the River Dee, one of the top rivers in Wales for fishing and famous around the world for its salmon; trout can be landed here too. There are loads of other options for casting off in Denbighshire including coarse, river and stillwater fishing, sea fishing, canal fishing and game fishing. Hendwr is only a few miles from Snowdonia National Park, with more active options as well as placid pastimes: castles, gardens, towns and villages are all here, alongside well-known Welsh attractions like the National Slate Museum and the miners’ tramway at Blaenau Ffestiniog’s Llechwedd Slate Caverns. Harlech, on the edge of the national park and overlooking Cardigan Bay, is well worth a day trip for its castle, history trail, shops and busy theatre. Or stick close to home to have a bit of hill-walking instead to build a nicely virtuous appetite for some local food and a nice cold pint; you might even catch one of the local male voice choirs on a practice night (sadly, joining in unprompted is not recommended even after nice cold pints).
