  • In the Vale of Ffestiniog in Snowdonia National Park
  • On the banks of the River Dwyryd
  • Toilets, showers and spacious disabled-access bathroom
What a smashing Snowdonia spot this is: Llechrwd Riverside Campsite is a 10-minute drive from Blaenau Ffestiniog in the fably scenic Vale of Ffestiniog, on the banks of the River Dwyryd and with gorgeous views towards the mighty mountains around the national park. If you've had a lengthy drive to get here (or fancy abandoning your wheels for the day), you'll no doubt be chuffed to hear that you can get out for a walk most easily from the site: you need only trot out through the gates to wander through a wildflower meadow or take a short drive for a lakeside walk. Beyond that, you're well placed for heaps more North Wales days out: get ready for slate caverns, an arresting Italianate village, vintage railways, hikes, bike rides and quite a lot more. This is a pleasingly peaceful site, with facilities kept to the essentials to avoid messing with the rural vibes. The folks here have done a fine job with those essentials though: there are plenty of toilets to go round, free hot showers, and a large accessible bathroom for disabled guests or those who need a bit of space to hose off wriggly kids. A washing-up room, chemical disposal point, washing machine and tumble dryer are also on site.

Local attractions

The Vale of Ffestiniog has three of the most visited attractions in north Wales: start off at the head of the valley and the Llechwedd Slate Caverns to take the miners' tramway or head deep into a mine via the funicular railway; explore the Italianate village Portmeirion made famous by TV series The Prisoner; and count yourself in too for a run on the narrow-gauge Ffestiniog Railway, running the length of the valley from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog. The shops, a leisure centre, a cinema, harbour, maritime museum, golf course, cafés and restaurants of Porthmadog should be investigated once there, before a vintage trip on the Welsh Highland Railway from here to Caernarfon via Beddgelert. There are bike trails of Antur Stiniog at Llechwedd Slate Caverns, or you could try hill walking or climbing at the Moelwyn and Manod mountains. The lower level forest and lake walks at Tan-Y-Bwlch are also a good option, as is hiking the four miles of sand at Harlech Beach and the smaller bays at Borth-y-Gest, or tackling as much as poss of the Welsh Coastal Path. While you’re at Harlech, look out for the theatre, golf course, Harlech Castle and the smaller ruin of Criccieth Castle nearby; if castles are your thing,Caernarfon and Conwy can be reached within an hour's drive.
