  • Glamping in a woodland park 10 minutes' walk from central Caernarfon
  • Within 30 mins' drive of Anglesey, Snowdonia and Llyn Peninsula sands
  • Pool, fitness room and bar and restaurant with sea-view terrace
You can’t really get a better spot than Caernarfon if you’re looking for a nifty north Wales holiday – settle in this strategic setting to be within a half-hour drive of Snowdonia, Anglesey, the seaside towns of the north coast, the beaches of the Llyn Peninsula… It’s a cracking idea too to bag a comfy place to stay at Coed Helen Holiday Park, where smart glamping units are spread around a spacious 54 acres of peaceful woodland park. You can stroll down to the town centre from here in 10 minutes or so for shops, pubs and restaurants, or to conquer the famed coastal castle. Too tuckered out for such efforts? No matter – head over to the bar and restaurant for locally sourced meals or drinks with scenic sea views (from the sun terrace if it's fine; through the picture windows if it's a tad damp). A playground is outside for the nippers, and there’s a programme of entertainment throughout the season, including brain-teasing quizzes and sociable theme nights. Budding sports pundits will be pleased to see that a big screen shows all the big matches. Indulge all you like at the restaurant, for a fitness room is also on site to help burn off a few calories; the open-air swimming pool is another option in the summer months, and there’s a good network of paths to take a ramble on in the surrounds.

Local attractions

North Wales is crammed with castles and Caernarfon has one of the finest of them all, with unusual polygonal towers and a stunning sea-view location. More cracking coastal views can be had at the town’s golf club, a mile from Coed Helen; a climbing centre, go-kart track and watersports centre are also around the town for active types. Snowdonia’s crammed with options for energetic days – Beddgelert (half an hour) and Betws-y-Coed (45 minutes) are good starting points for hikes, and it's 25 minutes or so to drive to the trails of Snowdon (or to hitch a ride on the railway from Llanberis). Kids looking perplexed when you suggest an exciting trip to a disused quarry? They’ll perk up when they see the fab trampoline park Bounce Below and the ziplines to scream along at ZipWorld, both 50 minutes away. Bit of beach time? There are heaps of choices around – some of the best are at Llanbedrog (40 minutes) and Abersoch (45 minutes) on the Llyn Peninsula. Coastal walks are gorgeous all around too – try a gambol on the Great Orme from Llandudno (45 minutes) or heading to Anglesey to stroll to atmospheric Ynys Llanddwyn (50 minutes).
