  • Gwynedd farm site with spectacular estuary and peninsula views
  • Equestrian centre on site with pony trekking
  • On the Mawddach Trail and close to Coed-y-Brenin bike trails
Don’t fret if you’re not sure how to pronounce the name of Bwlchgwyn Farm and Pony Trekking: you’ll be rendered speechless anyway by the pretty special views… The pitches on this large livestock farm overlook the Mawddach Estuary and Llŷn Peninsula, where the mountains of Snowdonia hit the sea, and the pitches are terraced to make the most of the vista. All the usual amenities are on site: free hot showers, toilets, a washing-up area and a launderette. The on-site pony trekking includes options for both beginners and expert riders for a tourism advert-worthy ride around the estuary or along the beach. The Mawddach Trail goes right through the site grounds for walkers and cyclists to experience truly unmissable views, and a footpath leads from the farm up to Blue Lake.

Bryn 3 electric optional grass tent or campervan pitch (eight person, XL)

Liked: The tent pitch size was great. Each pitch is on a different level. We booked an xl pitch to have some extra room for our awning and it was enough with some space spare. The views of Barmouth from the tent were beautiful and the showers and toilets were spot on.

Disliked: We did end up with some terrible pooling of water under our tent and the mud seeped over the groundsheet so we thought there may be a drainage issue. The check out time is 10 and that seems far too early but I would stay again for the views alone

Top location + WC's, level pitches, bad WC doors, bad ground for pegs.

Bryn 1 non-electric grass tent pitch (four person, medium)

Liked: The campsite is well appointed with toilet and shower facilities, with drinking water taps dotted everywhere, which is very good. The view from the upper pitches are the best I have ever seen from a campsite. The pitches are nicely levelled.

Disliked: Shower/toilet doors have no indication that they are in use, this resulted in my friend being walked in on, mid movement (as it were). The unknown person that opened the door used the handle with such force that it broke the locking mechanism. While relieving myself, I wondered if the door to my own cubicle could take the yanking and pulling that people seemed to give the doors... Why don't people knock? And why isn't the occupied status of the cubicles on display? The ground on which tents are pitched is full to the brim of slate, which means you play a game of patience with your pegs... which will break first... My will? Or the pegs? After moving pitch twice due to a fairly inflexible booking system my patience did give way and stopped using pegs in favour of holding my tent and awning down with rocks. The pitch Bryn 1 is terrible. it's view, smell and sound is the toilet blocks that you are situated right next to.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: The shower and toilet doors are double glazed doors so double glazing locking system so you need to pull up the handle twice in order for it to lock . You asked to move pitch to stay with your friends who were also staying onsite on the QUARRY PITCHES so you do need strong pegs for this not the flimsey ones that sometimes come with the tent which bend as soon as you look at them. You moved again as you asked to stay another night all be it the weather was terrible and trying to be accomadating i moved you just below your friend who also stayed another night extra. I cant see on your booking any awning paid for for your stay of 3 nights ?? Bryn 1 pitch is priced accordingly as it is next to the toilet block

Local attractions

The Blue Flag sands at Fairbourne, which can be reached via the estuary path, stretch for more than two miles. There’s safe swimming for families here, plus oodles of rock pools at low tide, and a variety of watersports. Guests can also hop aboard the miniature steam railway here for the short trip to Penrhyn Point, where a dinky passenger ferry runs to the seaside resort of Barmouth. Walkers should be delighted with the range of rambles in reach: perhaps a day clambering up Cadair Idris or exploring the Cregennan Lakes, a bimble to Barmouth featuring a bridge, a bog and a boat, an evening’s meander to the nearby waterfalls at Arthog and Friog, or a wildlife-spotting wander down a former railway line with views of the estuary. Two-wheelers can get going along the Mawddach Trail which runs from the site – where you can cycle for eight miles alongside the edge of the estuary, stopping for a picnic as you go – or the stonking Coed-y-Brenin mountain bike paths. Other nearby tourist attractions include the surreal Italianate village of Portmeirion, underground adventures at King Arthur’s Labyrinth, treetop fun at Go Ape, the Corris Craft Centre, the Talyllyn steam railway and the Centre of Alternative Technology, which has interactive exhibits on renewable energy, organic gardening and the like.
