  • Family-run park between the mountains and the sea
  • In Snowdonia National Park, five miles from Harlech
  • Pitches over 12 acres, with 28 acres of woodland and fields to wander
Bored with being boxed in on a campsite? Space, space and more space is the order of the day at Snowdonia's Barcdy Touring Caravan and Camping Park: it's in a secluded and sheltered vale where you'll have 12 acres' worth of camping area to pitch up in, and then another 28 acres of oak woodland and open fields to wander around and spot the wildlife. Barcdy is a select (and very friendly) family-run park where the owners have seen generations of small and excited campers go free range among these natural surroundings (there's a play area and wifi on site too, but it's likely the sprogs will prefer to roam). The grounds are a wildlife haven where nature spotters of all sizes can see badgers, owls and migratory birds, and loads more walks can be had in the hills leading off from the site. There's a good collection of pitches among the 12 acres and amenities are kept in tiptop condition with access to plenty of showers and loos, dishwashing sinks and a launderette. Shaver points and hairdryers are available too. Barcdy doesn't have a shop as it prefers to support local businesses: the nearest places for supplies are Harlech four miles away with food shops and newsagent, and Porthmadog five miles away with supermarkets and several smaller shops.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Clean and functional toilets/ shower facilities, in a great location and really helpful staff. A lovely quite campsite to avoid the hustle and bustle.

Disliked: Camping area was quite saturated when we arrived but this is due to the geography of the area and didn't impede our stay at all.

Liked: Beautiful scenery. The site itself is peaceful and quiet. The shower and toilet facilities are modern and clean. Well positioned for visiting nearby Harlech or Portmeirion. A 5 minute drive will take you to a big Aldi or Tesco in Porthmadog. Thank you for a lovely stay

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The toilets and showers are clean and modern, however they need hooks for hanging belongings in there. The location is great for getting to the beach and to Snowdon by car. Check in was quick and easy.

Disliked: It's a shame that the tent field is at the front of the site next to the busy road which is quite loud.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Camp site is in a lovely location. It is one of the quietest and darkest sites I have ever stayed at - I love how they don't have excessive outdoor lighting all over the site - just remember to bring a torch! You can drive to Penrhyndeudraeth in about 5 minutes or Porthmadog in about 10 if you need to do a shop or get a takeaway. I think it was about 15 minutes drive to Blackrock Sands but Criccieth I think is closer. The wifi was quite decent although I ended up buying a token for it from reception as the online sign up was glitching. The phone signal is patchy to non existent here. I thought the facilities were excellent. The showers were very good. They have evidently refurbished the toilet block in the last few years. There is even a laundry and a coffee machine and a freezer up by reception and I like how you got a bench with your pitch as well. I will probably stay here again as Black rock sands is one of my favourite beaches and is fairly nearby.

Local attractions

Coastline, castles, caverns, museums, steam railways, sailing, horse riding and hiking are all nearby, as is fishing at the two Tecwyn lakes within walking distance and sea fishing for mackerel and bass from Llandanwg Beach. For wanderers, the local walks accessible straight from site can take you roaming around Welsh woodlands with wondrous views of the Llŷn Peninsula in one direction and Snowdon in the other. If you're spending the day at Llandanwg, have a walk too across the causeway at low tide to Shell Island, where over two hundred different types of shell including oyster, whelk and cockle are washed up each winter; go from January to June for the best bags. Delve into days at Harlech, Porthmadog and Barmouth too, all popular pulls on the north Wales coastal trail. Harlech has a beaut beach backed by sand dunes, the famed Royal St David's Golf Club and the even more famed Harlech Castle, scene of the longest siege in Welsh history during the Wars of the Roses. (Wales is of course castle country, so get to Cricieth, Caernarfon and Conwy as well.) At Porthmadog, it'll quickly become apparent that these parts are also steam railway country: the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway and the Ffestiniog Railway, the oldest narrow-gauge railway journey in the world, both start in Porthmadog and the Welsh Highland Railway finishes here. Barmouth, the seaside town with another beaut beach, adjoining estuary and the Mawddach Trail, is about 13 miles to the south. Also within easy reach, you should count on a day out at decidedly individual Italianate village Portmeirion, the National Slate Museum at Llanberis or Llechwedd Slate Caverns, three more popular north Welsh pulls (take another puffy trip on the Snowdon Mountain Railway from Llanberis up to Snowdon's summit). You could also up the ante with activity day out at Glasfryn Parc and Greenwood Forest Park, visit King Arthur’s Labyrinth (underground boat trips!) or the Centre for Alternative Technology, both near Machynlleth.
