  • Llŷn Peninsula campsite 25 minutes’ drive from Snowdonia National Park
  • A 25-minute drive to Abersoch, and 10 minutes from Pwllheli
  • The Peg and Mallet pub, laundry room and on-site fishing lake
With secluded and spacious pitches spread over three fields, family-run Llwyn Ffynnon Caravan Park sits in hilly countryside on north Wales’s Llŷn Peninsula. There’s pretty much everything on tap here for relaxed, open-air getaways with the kids. All pitches have a 10-amp electric hook-ups and running water nearby, and the whole site has free unlimited wifi so teens can stay in touch with their pals. Other thoughtful, family-orientated amenities include heated shower and loo blocks with disabled access and baby-changing facilities, plus a laundry room with washing machine, tumble dryer and sink. You can hire firepits on site, and kindling is also available (for a charge). If you fancy a sociable evening getting to know your fellow campers, head for the dartboard and pool table in the on-site Peg and Mallet pub. There are plenty of well-kept local ales and beers to sample here, as well as more than 30 gins… Anglers, this is also a super spot for you. Watched over by Mr Ducky the heron, the on-site coarse fishing lake is stocked with carp, tench, bream, rudd and brown trout (no charge, but catch-and-release only please). The site caters for divers too, with facilities for refilling diving air canisters at a large bank for multiple fast fills. The town of Pwllheli is close by for bits and bobs from local stores, plus handy takeaways and family-friendly pubs. It’s around 10 minutes to farmers’ markets in posh seafront Abersoch, and half an hour to spectacular scenery in Snowdonia National Park.

Local attractions

Should you ever want to leave base camp, seaside Pwllheli (10 minutes’ drive) is the place for boat-mad folk. Here’s your chance to learn to sail a dinghy in Cardigan Bay, or take coastal cruises to spot seals, dolphins and seabirds. Back on dry land, kids can burn off energy in Dragon Raiders Paintball Park (15 minutes) or beat their personal best on go-karts at Glasfryn Parc (10 minutes). Adrenaline junkies, head to Blaenau Ffestiniog (45 minutes) to zoom over former slate mines by zip line, or test your nerve on via ferrata and seriously fast downhill mountain biking trails. If hiking is more your thing, Snowdonia National Park (30 minutes) has plenty of challenging trails, as well as easier routes suitable for all the family. For gentler pursuits, you can summit Snowdon in comfort on the Snowdon Mountain Railway (45 minutes). Or down on the coast, pretend you’re in a murder-mystery film at Italianate-style Portmeirion village (35 minutes), whose colourful streets and buildings once starred in 1960s cult classic ‘The Prisoner’.
